“Little bit of Germany in West Virginia”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2013

It's a little strange to know you are in West Virginia yet feel like you are deep in the woods of Bavaria. I know a lot of Germans colonised the area, but this is a little surreal.

I was given a huge room, complete with balcony in the Danube building.

With the very comfortable, four poster king bed, huge armoire hiding the TV and fireplace it felt like a fairytale.

Huge bathroom with jacuzzi, shower and double sink. The toiletries were definitely take homes.

There's a work desk, free wifi, coffee maker and fridge.

It's right on the river which borders Maryland, so it's a perfect place to stay to visit Antietam Battlefield and surrounds.

Shepherdstown is a sweet little town and well worth an hour or two ambling and eating.

Room Tip: Room 41 in Danube building is a corner room with river views. Had trouble with the stink beetles...

My husband and I booked the presidential suite for the first night after our wedding. We were very excited to stay in such an excitingly luxurious hotel really looking forward to the experience. However shortly after we arrived our experience began to turn into a miserable one. The first thing I notice when we got into our suite was a dead stink bug in my champagne glass, but I blew it off not wanting to ruin my wedding night and just decided to ignore it. Shortly after that my husband and I were sitting in front of the gas fireplace which then proceeded to burn out and not restart. Okay still not a big deal still decided to ignore it next up a bath in their big giant whirlpool tub- this is when it gets ugly... While trying to relax I find a huge floating gob of hair that was certainly not my own!!! At this point I was completely disgusted and we did finally call housekeeping and have somebody come to the room to clean the tub. Unfortunately by this point the night was pretty much nearing a dismal end & it just sort of killed all the romance and excitement of our wedding night. But finally after multiple complaints to the managers and multiple calls to the Bavarian they did finally refund our money. However, I still can't recommend the hotel because the Management there is not keeping up the facility. (At this point I haven't even mentioned all the things were going wrong in the room like the bed was broken & the mantle was broken on the fireplace.) Many things are not being properly kept up at the Bavarian Inn, it isn't a good value for the money!

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Inn for our anniversary weekend and we thoroughly enjoyed our time. We were in the Bodensee Chalet on the ground level floor overlooking the river. The room and bathroom were updated, well decorated, clean and a great size. We ordered room service and the food arrived promptly and was very good. We also spent some time relaxing on the deck overlooking the river. The only complaint is that the deck could use some updating, as the wood was rather old and chipped. There was also a constant drip from the deck above-possibly the AC unit.

We ate dinner at the Inn's restaurant. After beginning our meal on the outdoor patio, it began to rain and we were promptly given an indoor table. We ordered the surf and turf and the filet was especially good. I feel that the Bavarian theme could have been played up a bit more in the formal dining area, but the staff was very friendly and attentive and we enjoyed the experience.

On our last day we walked into the town for breakfast, which was only a short distance away. It's very quaint with a lot of small shops and restaurants.

Overall we had a great time, although I feel the rooms are a tad overpriced for the area. Other then this I would definitely recommend the Bavarian Inn, especially for a romantic getaway!

We have stayed in this hotel for the past 10 years, for weekend getaways. The grounds are very well kept. The management is upgrading the pool to an infinity and as of today (6/29/13) it isn't finished. Hotel is nice but is in serious need of a few upgrades. The electrical outlets are few as the ones they have are in use w/lamps, coffee maker etc. We unplugged to charge our electronics (2). That said the showers are painful! It is hard to turn around and there is no place to hang a wash cloth, no place to put shampoo, conditioner etc. just a soap dish. Taking a shower is a feat of dexterity. I left the door open so that I could move around easily. The Jacuzzi tub is nice but who washes their hair in a tub? Now, the restaurant. The food used to be very good. We have been here a few days now and decided to stay on the property to relax and rejuvenate with little or no distractions. This meant eating in the restaurant daily. The au jus that we requested with the chateaubriand was a 'gravy' au jus. The taste was beef boullion and flour. The hollandaise was thick with a flour taste and our spaetzle was cold. The meat was tasty. On another night we had the crab cakes that would have been delicious had the chef not been ambitious with the seasoning. The apple crisp dessert was absolutely terrible. It tasted almost like mince pie filling instead of the apples w/cinnamon we were expecting (we sent it back). We have eaten here many times of the years and never has the food been 'just okay' to 'just not okay'. For the price of a meal Bavarian Inn needs to do some soul searching....either hire a new chef, lower the prices or revamp the menu so they are in line with the food they are serving. On a side note, the sausages would have been good but they were cold too. The red cabbage is very tasty. The staff are absolutely wonderful (from the front desk, to the wait staff to the house cleaners). Everyone!!
As much as we liked the inn before, sadly we will not return any time soon (if at all).

Room Tip: We have been in several rooms over the years and we prefer the ones not overlooking the Potomac (tho...

Dear Sylviaroseva,
Thank you for taking the time to post your comments. I am so sorry that this last visit fell short of your expectations. We are in the process of renovating much of the property, including the new pool as you mentioned. I will certainly pass on your comments to our Executive chef and his team, as what you described is absolutely not the norm for our restaurant. I again apologize for this. We do hope that we can welcome you back again to restore the enjoyment you had over the past ten years. Thank you again for your feedback.
Sincerely,
The Asam Family

We booked the presidential suite as a special treat. The suite had plenty of room with a sitting area with a second tv but was not really separated from the bedroom. The room should not be advertised as a suite since there is no wall between the areas. The bathroom had a large Jacuzzi tub which was great for soaking tired muscles after a day of hiking. One amenity that I think is critical in any hotel room is a small refrigerator and this room did have one. But there were many maintenance issues with the room. The shower head was loose, one sink valve operated backwards from the other three, and the sofa upholstery was not in great condition. The worst problem was the toilet flapper not holding which caused the toilet to refill periodically. We finally had to close the valve to the toilet so we did not have to listen to it refill all night long. Be aware that the only access to this suite is a long, steep flight of stairs to room which made carrying heavy suitcases up difficult. The pool is under construction which was supposed to be from 9 - 5 which would not have presented a problem; however, the contractors actually began work before 7:30 , waking us up.
Breakfast on-site was very good, dinner just so so but we had great friendly service from Darla, David, and Stephen.

Thank you for your review. I am so sorry for the maintenance issues you encountered. Thank you for letting me know about them, and I can assure you they have already been fixed. We hope to have our pool construction completed, by mid August, and are very excited about this enhancement to the property. I am sorry that this detracted from your stay, but do hope you get to come back and enjoy the finished product. We hope to welcome you back soon.

Arrived at the Bavarian Inn for a conference for work, I was very happy with how everything turned out for us! The staff was so polite and did everything they could to keep us happy! The owners' sons are very nice and caring people who make sure to take care of their guests while they are staying at the Bavarian Inn. The food is EXCELLENT! Anything you choose is delicious! So close to everything - Antietam Battlefield, Shepherdstown, Harpers Ferry..you name it! I hope to be back in the future! Thank you for a wonderful stay! :)

My wife and I had two different sausage plates with kraut and beers. The beer was great, but both of us go a case of diareha from the sausage The Kraut was great. Beautiful dining room and view. The entire property was quaint and a great place to "get away".

Dear Valued Guest,
I'm sorry you and your wife were not feeling well. We serve around 50 of those same sausages every day, and this is the first we've heard of such an occurrence. We do take these comments very seriously, and I again apologize that you were not well that day. We are glad you enjoyed the beers and sauerkraut, and your room hope you might join us again.
