My husband and I booked a Garden View Luxury room and were very pleased. The furnishings are beautiful. Our room had a sitting area, gas fireplace and whirlpool bath. The private balcony had a view of the beautiful gardens and the Grey Stone Mansion where the restaurants are located. The food was excellent and the staff very courteous. We also appreciated the quiet , peaceful nature of the rooms. No loud noises, as can be found in some hotels. We were so impressed with our stay that we are already planning on returning next year for our 26th anniversary. Would highly recommend the Inn for anyone who enjoys luxury at its best.

Our stay at the Inn was most enjoyable. The room overlooked the Potomac River and the view was especially beautiful in the morning mist. The German food was excellent and the wait staff friendly and very efficient. The main building (a 1930s stone house) is very attractive.

Room Tip: Make sure to get a room with a view of the river.

On a walk from DC to Pittsburgh, stopped at Bavarian inn after 5 days on the trail. Feet and spirits needed a break and there was the inn, right on the river, across a brigde. The staff was excellent, and the amenities were wonderful. The dining, casual in the ratskellar or formal in the dining hall offered great choices. The location is tremendous. We are coming back!

Room Tip: The potomac view is nice but not necessary

My husband and I are frequent guests at B&B's and inns. We were not happy with our recent stay at the Bavarian Inn. We booked a Gardenview Luxury room which included a whirlpool bath, a fireplace, and a balcony. We could not use the balcony due to the chain smoker below. The whirlpool bath as well as the toilet are pink in color and are very dated, probably original. One of the jet controls did not work on the whirlpool bath. The fireplace did not work until the maintenance staff lit the pilot and then it worked for 15 min. at best even with the pilot lit. What did we pay for? Speaking of not working, the toilet paper holder was broken. The bathroom fixtures look original and, pay attention folks, the free Wi-Fi is sporadic at best. We did not feel we got our money's worth compared to other inns where we've stayed before. The shower tile was also pink and had mildew and the inn's restaurant building has an old musty smell. The only positive experience was our server Darla in the Rathskellar and we did like the food. At check-out when we mentioned the problem areas in our room, we got a very "could care less" response by the clerk. She just said, "sorry 'bout that." She should've called a manager and we should've been given some form of reimbursement. In short, this inn has some updated features with a beautiful scenic setting, but there definitely is room for more updating.

Room Tip: Gardenview rooms actually do have a pretty view esp at night.

Thank you for your comments. I am so sorry that your experience fell short of expectations. We are currently undergoing a number of rennovations throughout the property including, new carpeting, furnishings, stonework, and more. I am sorry that we had not yet gotten to your room yet. Thank you for letting me know about the fireplace, so I can fix that right away. We have also just switched our wireless internet company who have and are continuing to install multiple receivers throughout the property to help improve the signal. I again apologize that the signal was weak on this visit, and can assure you that Frontier is here daily until it gets resolved. I am happy to hear you enjoyed the restaurant and service though. We take all guest comments very seriously, and thank you for sharing them with us, as they are a valuable tool to help us improve. Nestled in the small town of Shepherdstown, West Virginia, located on a hillside overlooking the Potomac River, is a terrific inn and restaurant where one can great room and fine German cuisine in a beautiful setting. The Bavarian Inn rooms & suites are decorated in old world elegance, yet has all of the modern conveniences one expects from fine hotels. All of the rooms and suites have balconies that overlook either the garden or river view.

The restaurant and rathskeller, located downstairs, serve some of the finest German food to be found, as well as a good selection of wine and brews. If you prefer private dining, room service can bring a fine meal to your balcony.

The inn is located across from Shepherd University and the very small downtown area where you can browse small shops, coffee shops, and cafe/restaurants. In addition, historic Harper,s Ferry, WV. and Antietam Battlefield across the river in Maryland are close by.

So, if you're looking for a great get away location that's close to Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, or Maryland, this could be the place for you.

Room Tip: There are three floor levels, and all provide good views of either the Potomac River or the hotel ga...

The view from room 21 was specatacular. Aging, but nicely appointed rooms. A very reasonable price.

The restaurants on the property were first class.

Shepherdstown was lovely with many funky shops and restaurants

The Bavarian Inn is the BEST in every way. The rooms are thoughtfully appointed with every amenity available including top of the line toiletries, robes and even apples for a treat. The staff is expertly trained to please the guests and to work efficiently and quietly. The food is EXCELLENT!!!!! We had the Crab Cakes two days in a row because they were so delicious themselves and also accompanied with perfectly cooked asparagus and other vegetables in an attractive bundle, with spaetzle! We couldn't resist the Apple strudel because we were in a German environment, but the other desserts are freshly made and look absolutely delicious.

A bonus in staying at the Bavarian Inn is that it directly overlooks the Potomac River as it makes a bend. A delightful surprise happens about twice a day when the train chugs across the river. It is just like reading "The Little Engine that Could". The train is not at all bothersome, just beautiful!

We have stayed at the Bavarian Inn many times over the past twenty years. The management has now transferred to the second generation, and the quality remains the same. It is charming to see the family of four in a portrait as we enter the "Mansion" to check in or eat at the restaurant. They are dressed in attire from their homeland. The two cute little blond boys have now grown into handsome men who are visible to guests as they maintain the quality set by their parents.

The Bavarian Inn is right across the street from Shepherdstown College. Often an intelligent student is a well trained server in the restaurant. The town has interesting shops. The area is full of Civil War battlefields and memorials. Harper's Ferry and Antietam should be explored while in the area. Maybe you will have time for a swim in the clean pool which overlooks the Potomac.

Do enjoy your stay!!

Room Tip: Overlooking the river, or close to the walk to the restaurant might be options to investigate.
