“Group campsites are NOT a good deal”
Reviewed October 22, 2012

We and a group of friends stayed in the group campsite area. It's rated for 40 people max. Unfortunately, ALL tents MUST be on a tent pad area. There's only 5 pads which means if you have 40 people, you need to CRAM 8 people onto each small pad. That can be difficult if you have many adult couples/singles each with their own tent like we did. If you put a tent on the grass, they come by the next day and fine you per tent. There are 3 group sites, 40 people max per site and only one bath house to share. The men's bathhouse has one sink, one urinal, one toilet, and one shower for a potential max of 120 people. That can make things rather tight in the morning.

My dog and I stayed at a drive-up/walk-in tent site and found the campground to be perfect for what we needed. The tent pads were very well kept and the grounds as a whole were very clean and well kept. Each site down at our end had a fire ring, picnic table(s), tent pad(s), close proximity to water and a beautiful view of the rocks. From a camping standpoint, we couldn't have asked for much more.

We also came to WV to hike and explore as much as possible though and from that perspective, Seneca was a little lacking. We were able to hike from the campsite down into town and then over to the Seneca Rocks Trail (~4-5 miles roundtrip), which was a good hike. 1.5 miles of well groomed switchbacks and 1,000 ft. gain leads to beautiful views once you get to the actual trail. However, after those 1-2 hours that was about all there was to hike.

The following morning we spent the last couple of hours in the area driving up to Dolly Sods, which was absolutely gorgeous and full of unlimited hiking. I don't know that I saw any campground that rivaled Seneca Shadows but for the proximity to amazing hiking, we may try to stay up on the mountain next time. Not sure you can really go wrong with either place though, just a matter of what your taste is.

This campground is very small and does not have many amenities, but if you are just looking for a place to camp, this works great. The bathrooms are small but kept very clean-- flush toilets, hot water. The campsites are well-maintained and have great tent pads. The managers were super friendly, helpful, and courteous. The only drawback to camping here is that it's located fairly close to the main road so we could hear traffic when we were trying to sleep at night.

This is a very well laid out campground. The bathrooms were kept clean. We stayed in one of the shaded lots in loop B and had sufficient privacy. This is quite centrally located in the Seneca Rocks / Spruce Knob area, but you do have to drive to all the hiking/ biking trails…. However our need to showers and flush toilets overrode our desire to be right next to the trails. There is also a nice swimming holw about a mile from the campground.

Seneca Shadows is an excellent campground. Spotless grounds, clean bathrooms/showers and over the top service. Marilyn was a joy to talk with and the other staff members were courteous when they delivered our firewood ($7 bundle/$20 for 3) or brought us binoculars to watch climbers on Seneca Rocks. We camped in the tent camping area of the Seneca Shadows camprground and had a great time. The campground is super clean, with nice facilities. The campground managers were very pleasant and helpful. The tent camping area consists of tent pads, with a picnic table and fire ring. Tent pads were filled with a fine gravel/sand. We camped at site 72 which is on the end of the tent camping area nearest Seneca Rocks. It was nice and quiet and close to the woods and the trail that goes down to Yokum's store. Although you cannot see Seneca Rocks from this side of the tent camping area, it is only a short walk for a great view. There are pit toilets close to the tent area and showers are just a short walk away. All of the facilities were clean and neat. You cannot bring wood in or out of the campground, but they do sell bundles for $7. The campground managers were very helpful with the wood and dropped the bundles off at our tent site. I would highly recommend Seneca Shadows for a nice camping experience!

On a climbing trip in June we saw temps in the triple digits while we stayed at Seneca Shadows, 4 dudes and 2 tents fit perfectly in a $13 single site with exceptional views if the routes we climbed those days! $7 firewood bundles were delivered to the site which was very clean. The grass was manicured and there was plenty of room for some disc throwing. The hosts were super friendly. Pit toilet was close, the bath house was a short walk away- all very clean. I think it would be difficult to beat this value anywhere, much less with views of the rock!

The only drawback was zero cell and data service. Of course the campground can't control this, but it's important to know going into the Seneca valley that you'll be out of touch.
