The Blennerhassett Island in the Ohio River has been the site of history since the days of Aaron Burr. Though the original mansion burned years ago, the structure has been rebuilt and is open summer months. Access to the island is via a sternwheel franchise that departs each hour or so.
Not to be missed: The Mansion by Candlelight at Halloween, when actors in costume populate the mansion showing how the Blennerhassette's entertained back in the day.

“Awesome island in the middle of the Ohio River!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 16, 2012

We took advantage of some nice weather in September to check out Blennerhassett Island. We rode the sternwheeler over...that was a nifty ride, and took around 15 minutes or so. The power of the paddle wheel is amazing to see in action! On to the island....I wish we had gotten there earlier so we had more time, but we only had time to do either the mansion tour or the wagon tour. Being that we were more interested in the nature aspect of it, we opted for the wagon tour. The tour guide was pointing out different things and giving a history of the island, but a little kid who was making all kinds of noise was pretty much drowning out what the guide was saying. Ugh! Anyhow, it was a nice wagon ride (aside from the loud kid). The island is actually quite large, and at times, it was hard to tell we were even on an island. You could only see land all around. There was a farm on the property where the caretaker lives, and they have lots of beautiful horses in their pasture. There are lots of deer on the island, and they were fairly tame. They just looked at us as we rode by. There were black walnut trees everywhere...the Blennerhassetts planted them way back when. I'm surprised there weren't more fat squirrels running around, with the bounty of nuts available! There are plenty of picnic tables and a picnic shelter, if you'd like to take a picnic lunch with you. It was a fun little side trip!

“A must if you visit mid-Ohio Valley during season”

The trip to the Island on a sternwheeler is cool enough, but once you get there, you are in for more. They rebuilt the mansion that was burned to the ground during the Aaron Burr/Blennerhasset debacle. There are carriage rides, bike rentals, snacks, and a drop dead gorgeous place to spend a day. I mean this place is gorgeous. Big trees, wildlife, plenty of places to rest, mansion tours, and a very cool way on and off the island. The ferry ride is about 1/2 hour each way. It's not just a short trip accross the river.

“Great Relaxing Place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2012

This is a spot pivitol in our nation's history, and interesting for locals as well. Accessible only via boat, the island was once home to harmon and Margaret Blennerhasset and a whole lot of national intrigue! Take the time to do it - it's a great place to walk and ponder history - and the interpretive tours are well done.
