“Beautiful Stone Church in Lewisburg”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 15, 2011

As a part of a day trip to Lewisburgh, WV, the "Coolest Small Town in the US for 2011" according to Budget Travel, we included a stop at the Old Stone Presbyterian Church.
What a delight for historians! Organized in 1783 and built in 1796, it is the oldest continually operating church West of the Alleghennies (And that covers a lot of territory!)
The interior is elegant in its simplicity and surrounds you with sunshine and a sense of peace. It was used as an emergency hospital during the Civil War.

What we found equally fascinating was a walk through the adjacent cemetery -- some of the tombstones evoke sadness, but others carry remarkably amusing sayings as well. To read about an intrepid explorer from the 1800's who died in Alexandria, Egypt or come across the grave of a "favorite consort" makes for an interesting stroll.

The church and cemetery are easily accessible from the main street of the town, just about a block and a half south on Church Street. You won't regret making the stop!
