We spent the night in Fairmont, WV after a West Virginia University football game. The next morning we had a few hours to spare before heading out and decided to check out Prickett's Fort State Park. The Visitor Center and fort were closed. A sign at the visitor center indicates it is closed between November and April. There is plenty of parking and we found a paved trail behind the parking lot that led across the river. A nice walk and beautiful scenes for photo taking made this an enjoyable visit.

Visitor's center was very friendly and has bike rentals available. You can Bike or hike along a paved path about two miles of very easy riding through an old railway tunnel that is lit. A very nice short ride that could also be walked. The park aslo connets to a longer fine gravel trail that goes to Morgantown along a river.

The Fort itself is also very interesting and well worth a visit.

Traveling through West Virginia I didnt expect to find a small gem that I had never heard of. We had been traveling for hours and decided to stop and take a break from driving when we spotted the sign for Pricketts Fort State Park. Upon arriving we noticed a charming little visitors center beside the main attraction, the Fort. The folks were very friendly and knowledgable about the history. We toured the fort and found it very interesting and were impressed with the construction of the fort. The fort sits atop of a hill overlooking the Monongehlia River and loved the view. We were alitte disappointed to find that they didn't have any food or concession stands however they do have vending machine with a very nice selection of drinks at very cheap prices and the fronts of the machines were pictures of the Fort and other historic buildings on the property and not of the tacky Coke or Pepsi logos. This is another example of the attention to detail that makes this Park so nice. Dont plan a vacation around this park but do stop if your traveling through the area.
