“Loved Graceland”
Reviewed June 9, 2008

We were booked into the Graceland for one night, but stayed an extra night because we liked it so much. All of the rooms are named, and nicely furnished with what appears to be antique furniture. The continental breakfast is nice, but ends too early. You have a beautiful view of Elkins and are within walking distance of the downtown area. Try El Gran Sabor restaurant for great Venezuelan food and service!

This truly is a spectacular old barn, breathtakingly mintained. It would be a great place to have a wedding. Staying in a place like this in any major city or resort area would easily cost twice what it does here.

The inn is on the campus of a school I'd never heard of, Davis and Elkins College, and I'm intrigued by their Augusta Center, which holds classes on Appalachian art. It'd be nice to come back and take one of those classes. I stayed in the smalllest, cheapest room in the Inn proper (the Cougan; there's also an adjoining conference center) and I found it charming, altough I would have liked to have had a desk onto which to put my laptop.

Apparently, some of the work here at the Inn is carried out by student studying hospitality, whcih is pretty cool. That said, my only criticism is that the front desk is fairly slack. They're not particularly friendly or welcoming; they seem to get overwhelmed quite easily (like when I called down to ask for a WAP key, or when I asked for some ice), but that said, I'd so much rather stay at an old historic inn steeped in character than at the Holiday Inn.

The only other thing you should know is, if you're driving from Washington, it takes a long time to get here, and you can't do it from an interstate. US 55 is rather twisty and mountainous and you will be on it for a very, very, very long time. Again that said, you feel totally nestled in the heart of the mountains here-- it's an amazing getaway. I would come back and do the Rails to Trails bike ride, mountain climb, take an arts class.

This is the former summer home of U.S. Senator Henry Gassaway Davis built in 1893. The main house has a panoramic view of the Tygart valley. The rooms and suites have deep soaking tubs along with modern showers and fixtures. The restored Oueen Anne style mansion has period pieces with update bedding. An open sweeping grand staircase rises to a sitting area and with hallways branching to the bedrooms. The conference center is more of a typical hotel room, comfortable and clean.

The mansion is also home to a wonderful resturant. One can eat on the wrap around veranda overlooking the town, eat in the solarium or one of the three other dinning rooms.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The new management of Graceland invites you to come and see how we've changed, and want you to know that we look forward to accommodating all of our guests and their unique lodging and dining needs. Graceland Inn, the former summer residence of West Virginia's first Democratic US Senator, Henry Gassaway Davis, is on the National Historic Landmarks Register. In 1996 the restoration of Graceland Inn was complete and opened to the public as an Historic Country Inn with a full-service restaurant. The main purpose for restoring the mansion and developing an Inn, Restaurant, and Conference Center was to create a dynamic learning lab for Davis & Elkins Hospitality and Tourism students. All rooms in Graceland Inn are furnished with antiques or Victorian reproductions. Each room has a private bath, individual climate controls, a television, and complimentary wireless internet access. Large rooms have marble lined bathrooms, and one room is equipped for handicap access. An elevator is available. The facility is completely smoke free. We also offer complimentary continental breakfast for all guests. Graceland also features a Conference Center with more traditional style hotel rooms with modern amenities and conferencing facilities. We also offer meeting and banquet space at our sister mansion, Halliehurst. The restaurant is located on the first floor of Graceland. We have four elegant dining areas, and each room's decor has its own character. In the summer months you can dine on our Veranda that overlooks the beautiful town of Elkins. The Graceland Restaurant is open to the public for lunch Wednesday-Friday from 11:00am to 2:00pm (Tuesday lunches in the summer), dinner Tuesday-Saturday from 5:30pm to 9:00pm and for Sunday Brunch 11:00am to 2:00pm. We look forward to serving you. ... more   less
