“Beautiful trip to take in the fall!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 1, 2012 via mobile

This steam engine is wonderful example of our past history. The ride travels along the river and you have awesome views of the gorgeous scenery. We had a perfect fall day with the bluest skies and great foliage. One thing to note there is no cell service in this county quite fascinating for those of us attached to technology. Also very limited choices for dining after you ride the train. There was a small tavern across the street from the railroad which had recently opened the folks there were wonderful and we had a great lunch and good conversation.

“Fun little trip aboard the Durbin Rocket”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 29, 2012

Day 2 of our railroad mini-vacation (we rode the Cass the day before) saw us in Durbin for a ride aboard the Durbin Rocket - the fastest train in Durbin - and the only one! At the stately pace of about 7 mph, the train runs along the side of the Greenbrier River and the scenery, while not as dramatic as a trip up the mountains, is lovely.

The crew was delightful and clearly they enjoy their work - even at the tail end of their running season. This is a short, two hour trip and a treat with authentic old cars, including a caboose that one can tour and/or ride in for the trip (if you don't care for smoke and cinders).

Oh, and be sure to get a cone at the store where the tickets are sold - the ice cream is delicious!

Awesome old steam engine takes you on a voyage along a beautiful stream. They even have overnight cabooses that you can stay in.

“Scenic ride with fall colors”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 7, 2012

Early October is a beautiful time to take this ride along a scenic valley. The completely open car behind the steam engine got too many ashes for me. There is also a fully enclosed car that used to belong to the Postal Service for mail sorting, and a open car that has a roof to protect from the ashes. Get an ice cream cone after the trip across the road in the ticket shop.

“Great ride”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 6, 2012

The Cheat Mountain Salamander train excursion is great. While the trip has been shortened due to stream restoration work through 2013, it is still a great ride. The scenery is great and the stops for photos are great. A very picturesque trip especially when the autumn leaves are alive with color.
