“Spacious Lodge, beautiful location, rooms need makeover”
Reviewed November 24, 2013

This was our first visit to WV. We came to see the fall foliage. This was one of the places my husband found on the internet. Blackwater Falls State Park is beautiful for picture taking, hiking and sightseeing. The lodge is in a beautiful location, very spacious, with a nice restaurant inside that has a huge selection on their menu. BUT.. the rooms are very outdated. The bathrooms are tiny, with old tile and no amenities like a hair dryer, and ours didn't even have counter space. The only place to put your things was a small shelf above the toilet. The beds were comfortable and the rooms were clean, but not fancy at all. The lodge has a good size pool and large hot tub that we made use of on a very cool autumn evening. So come enjoy the colors and everything the State Park has to offer. Just don't expect fancy or frills at this Lodge.

Room Tip: Try to stay away from traffic areas, because you will hear everything.

The wood walls do not isolate noise, and you hear the people next door talking, and the old air conditioning motors go on and off all night. There are more high pitch whining of some electric motor. Maybe it's better to stay in the cabins there.
The meals are not bad, but do not try their steaks. Never had such a bad one.
The staff is very friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: The rooms with the view have a very nice view, but cost a bit more. I think it is worth the differen...

I travel a great deal and admittedly have high standards. This hotel barely meets them. It is in a wonderful location, has a nice restaurant, and facilities aren't bad. The rooms are in desperate need of updating. I believe they have attempted some of this updating--flat scree televisions, new furniture, new lighting. However, there remain scratches on the wood paneled walls from the old television sets, the bathrooms look 40 years old, and plaster is falling down from the ceiling. Water pressure in the bathroom is awful and the mattresses are dreadfully uncomfortable. The wireless internet is terribly slow. There aren't really any other better options in the area. The park is beautiful, I just wish the state would put the money into the property.

Room Tip: Make sure you book a room overlooking the canyon!

Visiting here after 50 years. Wonderful experience again. Visiting in October makes for a beautiful experience. Make your reservations ahead of time because they fill up fast. Very accommodating to older folks. It is an older lodge but sit is so comfortable and very welcoming. Not overpriced and they certainly could be.

Room Tip: Book early to get canyon view rooms.

We stayed 2 nights in October, the foliage was beautiful. The lodge is a bit dated but still well maintained. We had a room looking toward the gorge. The water went between warm and cool but still managed to get a great shower. The breakfast buffet was very good and a great value.

We spent two days hiking trails going to scenic overlooks, and viewing the famous Blackwater Falls. The fall colors were awesome but the falls and overlooks would be good anytime of the year. There are many areas to stop as you walk and enjoy the scenery. When the weather is right the sunrise and sunsets are unbelievable.
This is a good place for a getaway from the stress of the city. Lots of places to explore nearby for arts and crafts as well as the scenery. this is also a family friendly location.

This would make a great place for a group outing. We have been here a couple of times and enjoyed both stays. Room is comfortable. Plenty of places to roam around. We actually saw a bear and deer on the premises. Check the wildlife sighting clipboard at the front desk. Lots of pictures were taken this trip. We enjoyed the pool and hot tub but they have covered the jets so the hot tub is just that, a hot tub. Exercise room is nice too. Highly recommend.
