In Spring/Winter, I highly recommend arriving before nightfalls. Because the park is located on the mountain, the roads get narrow and some of the curves can get a little ridiculous. But other than that, it is a spectacular drive.
We did about an 8mile hike from the Lodge to the Blackwater Falls and it was such an incredible experience. The trails are well marked and the trails are clean (not overgrown), and maps are offered at the Lodge.
There was a notice to look out for black bears, but we didn't see any. We found some deer running across the park. I wouldn't recommend going on the trails in flip-flops (yes, some actually do) as some of the trails were muddy or overflowed with water.
I can't wait to return.
