“Inviting accomodations and staff”
Reviewed February 24, 2014

These newly remodeled rooms are very nice - made for a very relaxing weekend of combined work and play. The ski slope was nearby and transportation from the lodge was available. The staff was very helpful in relocating us to a room with a better view when we asked. The food at the restaurant was fine though not very interesting. I recommend at least one trip into town for a meal at a local joint.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms may provide a view of only the storm drain if you are on the entry side of the bu...

The “all new” Canaan Valley Resort is a first-rate international ski and four-season resort! We have viewed the construction progress for several years, and finally in October 2013, the West Virginia Parks system presented a GEM to the state and to the country.

We have stayed at several European, Canadian, and New Zealand resorts, and the Canaan Valley Resort generally exceeds the “creature comforts” of these foreign resorts.

We do not want our hyperbole about the Canaan Valley Resort to reflect on the quality of the skiing at 4200+ feet at Canaan Valley and nearby Timberline. In our view, both ski resorts are among the finest mid-Atlantic ski resorts. And these ski resorts compare favorable with New England skiing; however, Whistler/Black Comb, Lake Louise, Beaver Creek, CO, Vail, Deer Valley, and nearly all the Rock Mountain states and Cascades states offer excellent skiing.

Nearly 40 years ago, we opened the Resort w a stay at Raven Lodge. That was one Holiday Inn type building and a snack and coke machine, and we arrived in a station wagon in a blizzard!

Today, the parking lot of Canaan Valley Resort is filled with cars from D.C., Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia. Unless one owns a $500,000 - $1,000,000 home in Timberline, Canaan Valley Resort is the best alternative.

The old Canaan Valley Resort was pure Holiday Inn; The new Canaan Valley Resort might compete with some very nice lodgings in Beaver Creek, Vail, and Deer Valley!

We hope that all Mountaineers take pride in the new Canaan Valley Resort. And we hope that Mountaineers will enjoy the new Canaan Valley Resort year round.

The bedrooms (several configurations and prices) are new and sparkling. We talked with several cleaning staff members, and these ladies were beaming with pride.

Actually, we recommend the mini-suites for a bit more class and living space. We think the mini-suites are worth the price upgrade. In general, the sleeping areas are quiet and very inviting.

The new Canaan Valley Resort has great public spaces, and some of these public spaces are three stories high. Of course, the current decorations are winter and snowmen. We lost count of the numerous public spaces, and small lobbies are in abundance.

The new gift store at the new Canaan Valley Resort seems to be a small museum of Mountaineer crafts and clothing. The lady in charged also beams with pride. The front desk clerks are beaming with pride.

There are several on-site dining choices from an open-air café to the Laurel Lounge with great mountain views to the very excellent upscale Hickory Dining Room. Great thought was given to providing dining options for families, couples, and business conferences.

We are huge fans of the HOT breakfast buffet. Lunch seems to be burgers, salads, and sandwiches; we choose to be off-site skiing during lunch. It is dinner that the Hickory dining room shines. The menu provides great options for all. In our view, the steaks are priced right. The Hickory dining room is a “room with a view.” Expect a full service bar with a nice wine selection. Actually, we find dinner at the Hickory Room to excel other Canaan Valley and Davis options. Still not convinced? Within five –ten minutes there are several other price options for those on a limited budget.

The new Canaan Valley Resort offers four-five floors, depending on location. Be aware that the older “Holiday Inn” rooms are still standing, but these are soon slated for elimination.

Our room tip: select a top story mini-suite with a view of the ski area in the winter, and we advise this same room for the other four seasons.

Canaan Valley Resort offers several packages, and provides a romantic get-aways all year long.

If I didn't know any better, I would presume that you had my title! Thank you so very much for your incredibly warm thoughts, and your glowing recommendation of Canaan Valley. We truly believe that we have the privilege of working at A GEM - and by the looks of it, that pride shows through in our team members as well.
We are thrilled that you are as in love with the new Canaan as we are, and most certainly look forward to welcoming you back.

As you will read elsewhere, this is a nicely renovated lodge at a fair price. But with really only one full service restaurant we were severely let down at a forced buffet that costs over $80 for a family of 4 with tip and no drinks. Kids hated it as no kid food whatsoever and the "adult food" was just awful. If you have any respect for what you eat as a full service meal goes and what you pay for it then plan on a 30 minute round trip to Davis or Thomas.

We completely understand your frustration. Please accept our most sincere of apologies. I've taken the liberty of forwarding your comments immediately to our management team, and food and beverage team, as there is always an a la carte menu option to be available - even on evenings when we are serving a buffet. Our service team did not communicate this to you, and for that, we are deeply sorry. We strive to offer affordable, and family-friendly options for all our guests, and for you and your family we fell short.
Thank you for offering your feedback however, and giving us this opportunity to grow. We hope we might have the opportunity to welcome you back.

Our family spent the President's Day Holiday at Canaan Valley in the new lodge. We stayed in a junior suite, which was clean and comfortable, with one king bed and a pull-out sofa for our daughter. I had been a bit confused from the website about what to expect - to be clear, don't expect a separate room or a fireplace in a junior suite - just a small kitchen area, which was only mildly useful, with no shelves in the cabinets and no plates or cups or silverware of any sort. It looks like they forgot to finish that area, Otherwise, a good room with decent internet connectivity (included) but few tv channles (although you should really be outside anyway!).
One tip would be to ask for a room with a view - I had assumed that we'd face the park, not the parking lot, in a junior suite, but didn't ask (that was 420). Walls were also a bit thin, but not too bad. Very comfy bed and good climate control, considering how bitter cold and windy it was at night.

Because of the frquent snow, we ended up eating at the resort more than we planned. The main dining room food was pretty good (dinner buffet had a good selection the one night we tried it). It is by no means anything fancy, but the dining room looks out on a great view and it was pretty tasefully done. Staff were generally very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was fun if you ask for a window seat, as you can watch many deer grazing on the snowy fields in the distance. Breakfast selections were typical. An omelette bar would be a nice addition. And maybe some additional beverage choices. The cafe near the front entrance was good basically for a quick snack like a wrap or pannini - nothing too spectacular, but fine. Food prices were reasonable, expecially since you are a drive away from any other choices.

We enjoyed the ice skating rink and pool - after a zamboni run the rink seemed pretty high quality, and there is a nice little warming area with a fire where you rent your skates. The pool seemed not quite as updated as everything else, and they certainly don't skimp on chlorine, but it was a great break from being outside, and the hot tub felt really nice at the end of the day. We were happy they supplied towels as well.

The skiing was surprisingly good. Of course it is no Switzerland, but snow conditions were about as good as they probably ever get. Trails were in good shape. It was easy for those who rented equipment to pick it up, and lift lines were minimal. There was enough variety of trails for a full day of skiing. Probably more than 2 days would be a lot for any local resort, but there is a nearby one if you need variety. We booked lift tickets through Liftopia with a small discount - very easy to use the vouchers. We were a little disappointed that the skiing is a short ride from the hotel (rather than ski-in/ski-out), but they run a free shuttle, and it is really only a few minutes away. No problem parking.

Overall, the new lodge is quite nice and looks to be a wonderful improvement from the old nearby units slated for demolition. We'd even consider a trip back in the summer. The surrounding area is beautiful, and a pretty easy drive from DC area now that Corridor H (Route 48) is so far along. On the way home we stopped at the Purple Fiddle in Thomas for lunch - a great choice with so much to look at on the walls (an "I spy" paradise for kids) and frequent live music and good sandwiches to boot!

Room Tip: Ask for a view - the "back" side seems to all face the better vista.

Thank you so much for leaving such a warm review. Canaan is not Switzerland, but we truly believe it is our little slice of heaven in the West Virginia mountains.
Please accept our apologies for the confusion regarding the junior suite - we begun to draft changes to the website so there are no ambiguities with the suite types.
When you make plans for your summer travel, we'd be honored to be your destination. Looking forward to having you back.

We did a family get together at Canaan Valley for skiing and it was outstanding. The staff bent over backwards to accommodate us. We all had a great time even if skiing was not an interest. We catered a private dinner and the food was absolutely fantastic.

Room Tip: We prefer the south wing

Our family planned a spur of the moment "Snowdays Getaway", and we brought our dog, Lucy. Cabins allow pets, and fortunately, there was a cabin for us. We were pleasantly surprised at how nice the lodge renovations are! When our family wasn't skiing or snowboarding, we spent a lot of time hanging out in the lodge playing family games, watching t.v. & watching snowflakes falling, as well as relaxing by the stone fireplace. There were about 6 or 8 different seating areas that are all unique, charming and private, even though they're in the large open lobby. The layout of the lodge after renovations is so much better - it's outstanding! There is an inviting café & quaint gift shop on the left as you enter the lodge. Our kids enjoyed the two arcades, indoor pool & hot tub. The cabins do not have a t.v. or WIFI, but the lodge does provide this. I was glad there was not a t.v. in the cabin, as we came to Canaan to enjoy nature & time away from electronics/t.v.. The cabins have vaulted ceilings, stone fireplace and a small kitchen. The cabins aren't updated, but they are fine. We brought food from home to save money for our trip. We enjoyed ice skating in the outdoor, canopy-covered rink near the lodge. We ended up staying two nights (school kept getting cancelled), and received a third night for free. Canaan emailed me a "Winter Offer" on my smart phone while we were there (stay 2 nights in a cabin & get 3rd night for free). I talked with folks at the front desk, and they honored this offer for us. Even though we left at 8pm the night we were going to stay (because school had announced a delayed opening the next morning), we enjoyed another full day that we would not have been able to enjoy. The service was excellent. Definitely recommend Canaan Resort to you!

We are delighted that you had a chance to enjoy so much of the resort during your stay . Sometimes unexpected vacations are the best, and Canaan is the perfect place to be 'stuck' in a snowstorm. Thank you so much for sharing your recommendation of Canaan. We very much look forward to welcoming you back.
