“In Transition...”
Reviewed March 14, 2013

We went on a family trip as a ski package. There was a snow storm as we arrived so the skiing was very good the next couple of days.
The staff was very friendly.
The restaurant choices were very limited & in the bar area too. The restaurant had a buffet nightly with very good food. Sometimes you do not want a buffet though. The bar only had bar food.
We had to walk outside to rooms. This was very cold for us & kids.
The rooms are being renovated & they do need it. Our room entrance faced the construction area. The rooms, we had 2 side by side was in great disrepair, no refrigerator, limited lighting and poor furniture.
The prices were not too low either considering what you get for the money at this time.
The pool & hottub is in main bldg. Must go outside to get to it. Also all rooms get to them outside (motel) entrance & stairs.
The landscape is very pretty and across street from slopes. A school bus takes you to the slopes. The slopes restaurant overcrowded, poor service (not many servers), & food limited choices & not so tasty also very little seating.
Go again? No

Room Tip: Choose a room away from construction!!

Thank you for your honesty and feedback, and please accept our sincere apology that we disappointed you during your stay.
We absolutely understand your frustration and most certainly will take your comments into careful consideration as we are always looking to be flexible and change based upon what is best for our guests.
We appreciate that your experience has left you unwilling to return, but we hope you might offer us the opportunity once our renovations are complete. We believe you will find an entirely new resort with much more convenient access to all our amenities.

All the Best!

I was a little concerned coming here after reading some of the reviews. I assure you this is a great value for anyone. We were lucky to have excellent ski conditions on the first weekend in March. It snowed the entire time we were there. The resort is in a state park and they are in the middle of renovations expected to be done in august 2013. The rooms are definitely dated, but clean and comfortable, and you are there to ski, shower and sleep, right? The main lodge is dated and under construction as well. Beautiful little gift shop. Front desk very friendly, free coffee in the am. We did not eat in the restaurant, but in the lounge. Good bar food and drink specials. Staff was so friendly. The ski area is beautiful, nice outdoor bonfire. The skating rink behind the lodge is nice, It is outdoors with a beautiful view. I can't wait to return when the renovations are complete. We may have just been lucky this weekend, but the quality of snow / skiing rivaled that of a western resort. We travel extensively and stay in many beautiful resorts and this was really a nice, family friendly, down to earth place. Its nice being around people who aren't full of themselves and genuinely kind. Don't come expecting the Four Seasons....it is what you make it. My 8 year old son also enjoyed the pool and game rooms as well. Perfect for families. Wish we would have had time to explore the area a bit. Next time.....

Canaan Valley Resort is a four-season delightful resort, and is centered in Canaan Valley State Park. The winter draw is two mid-Atlantic ski resorts: Timberline and Canaan Valley ski resort. There is premier golfing, ice-skating, tennis, and swimming.

Our very first visit was in December 1977, and we have been for the past 36 years. In 1977 there was only one lodge unit open, and the “meals” were available only from vending machines. We arrived in a rear wheel drive station wagon in a “blizzard,” and careful driving skills were essential. On our first day of ski lessons, we inquired, “Why is no one skiing?” The ski instructor informed us that people did not ski in a blizzard! Well, we did, and we still do.

Immediately, we envisioned a “Holiday Inn” type of construction, as opposed to the Black Water Falls lodge. There was always a lack of privacy as the walkways permitted view of the lodge rooms. Fortunately, West Virginia is investing in a modernization, and the lodge rooms will be 21st century.

Probably only Snowshoe Ski Resort offers better WV skiing. The skiing is superior to Midwest skiing, not as challenging as New England skiing, and certainly not as nice as western skiing. However, Canaan Valley skiing is a 6 ½ hour drive, and that is convenient.

There is an abundance of hiking trails, mountain biking, cultural activities, natural beauty, art galleries,…. My very favorite day’s end activity is going to the private front of the Resort room (overlooking the mountains), cracking open a nice Cabernet sauvignon and simply enjoying the ardent mountain beauty.

Canaan Valley Resort offers amenities such as daily maid service, on-property dining areas, and general “hotel” features. We do enjoy the main dining room at the lodge. There are a few restaurants in Canaan Valley and nearby Davis, However, the culinary scene is limited.

We own GM OnStar vehicles, and we seem to “know the Canaan Valley area” fairly well. Land of Canaan Resort offers a much-needed carefree luxury holiday. We shall return again and again.

Room Tip: Request a room with a mountain view.

My wife and I went on a ski trip Feb. 24-26, 2013. We chose this resort because of the great price and relatively short distance from the Baltimore area. It was GREAT choice for a number of reasons:
1. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful.
2. The rooms were quiet and well-maintained.
3. The resort was a 5 minute drive to ski area and offered a free shuttle bus.
4. The resort also feature an indoor pool, hot tub, sauna, gym, game room, and outdoor ice skating rink.
5. There was a great restaurant on-site and a lounge.
6. Outside of skiing, we also we went to the town of Davis (which had a few restaurants) and Blackwater Falls.

The resort was a great deal and we will certainly return. We were not distracted by the ongoing construction project and enjoyed the "liveliness" of all the work. For those who are seeking perfection, it may be good to wait until renovations are complete.

Overall it was a fantastic trip and the staff are the #1 asset to the resort.

This is a typical ski resort. Outdated 70s era decor. Old TV. Terrible food at the resort buffet. The room we stayed in was much cleaner and better looked after than most ski resorts I've been to. A good thing since I spent most of my trip sick in bed. The beds are very comfy and the place was a lot quieter than I expected. They are building two new wings at the main building - which I am hoping is the beginning of some renovations. Still, despite being sick, it was a good and restful stay. I look forward to going back when I can actually ski.

Canaan Valley was a great place to stay while in the area to ski for several days! This was our second visit. The room was clean and had all the amenities we needed. We enjoyed a nice dinner at the lodge and enjoyed the peace and quite the area offers. A new building was being constructed and we will definitely be back to ski and check out the new rooms. :) The only downside we noticed was that something used in the hot tub water bothered our eyes so we didn't stay in very long.

Canaan Valley Resort is a great place for families and groups. The facilities are average, but very clean and relatively in order. The pool is treated with saltwater, as is the hot tub, which is great. The televisions are old-school (both in the rooms and in the bar), making it difficult to watch sports and scores that are now much smaller and intended for viewing on larger LCD and Plasma TVs.

The internet is free, but be sure to bring a CAT-5 (ethernet) cable with you! If you have an Apple Airport Express or wireless router, it might be good to have so you can setup wireless access in your room (which is the rooms lack).

Room Tip: Choose a ground-floor room as there are no elevators up or down!
