the cultural center has a WV museum in the basement that is really done well and it's hard to believe it is here in Charleston. The museum has the feel of many larger museums in DC, but its all local stuff and exhibits. Don't miss this place.

Loved the museum. Something for everyone. A wonderful history lesson about West Virginia presented in a way that is not boring.

The W V Cultural Center provides an excellent walk through the scienctific and historial aspects of WV. As one rides down the escalator, you are greeted by a recording of the present governor. Then the fun begins. You enter a darkened area with small star like lights above and on the floorwhere there is a brick embeaded giving the time periods you are entering along with an excellent auditory presentation of what happened during that era. You will be exposed to interesting accounts both visually and auditorally of prehistoric times up until present day. The museum is full of very interesting artifacts from the jaw bone of a mastadom, Civil War era items, a set up of a coal mine, early pottery and lovely glass items, items produced in the state, early explorer's personal items such as Daniel Boone's rifle, art works, a 1940s - 1960s drug store, an excellent model of the New River Gorge Bridge in the autumn, and many more artifacts. It is very easy to reach on Greenbrier Street off I-64 with lots of metered parking which is free on weekends. If arrangements are made ahead of time, school groups will be provided with a video camera and later the children can upload their recordings to a flash drive which is provided free of charge by very helpful and accomodating staff.

The museum update is wonderful. Whether you are a native or just passing through, this is a must-see attraction when visiting West Virginia's capitol city.

There is something for everyone at the Cultural Center. The state museum is there as is the Archives. Lectures are presented monthly on a variety of topics.
