This historic location is filled with excellent, interesting information. The stat capitol sites on multiple acres on the side of the Kanawha River. There are steps across the Kanawha Blvd that lead down to the river for a nice place to sit and fish or just watch the boats. The capitol grounds are covered with old and new trees filled with birds and squirrels. Feel free to bring nuts and popcorn to feed the squirrels. The lawn towards the river contains multiple status representing solders, presidents, etc. As you walk to the east side, the east entrance of the capitol is visible, benches are available under the trees for a peaceful rest, parking is available in the evenings and weekends at this side of the capitol. As you continue around the capitol you will arrive on the Northside - the actual FRONT of the capitol, many think it is the back but no so. The northside also is the location of multiple government buildings, a couple fountains, benches, a very large sidewalk area where various events are held. The northside leads to the Veteran Memorial Area which continues on to the west side of the capitol and the cultural center. The Coal Miners memorial is located at the sidewalk between the west entrance of the capitol and the main entrance to the WV Cultural Center. There is metered parking in this area, free on weekends. From the westside entrance of the capitol which is near the Governors office - walk the sidewalk and it will take you to the Governors mansion next door. Generally the capitol is unlocked around the clock but restrictions are in place for security purposes. Most of the capitol is open for guests to freely roam and look. Entrance to the house and senate is on the second floor and general open to visitors. As you walk down the halls there are pictures of previous governors, various pieces of history and artwork. The capitol houses many offices including the governor, secretary of state, house and senate members, etc. The lawn is beautiful especially in the spring when all the tulips, various flowers and trees are in bloom. This is where the locals ride bikes, bring kids to play & ride bikes, picnic, fish on the river, fly a Frisbee, etc. Easy access from I-64, fuel and food next door. MiLB ball park just down the street with the Pirates team of WV Power. Charleston Airport up the hill from the capitol. Across the river is the University of Charleston. Also down the street, west, is the Clay Center. Charleston has plenty to see and do. This is NOT the area where white water rafting is available-that is approx. 1 hr south. Hotels are several blocks away. Hospital are just a few blocks away as well.

Designed by famed architect Cass Gilbert, our Capitol Building is second to none. It has all the classic features - lots of marble, limestone, Romanesque columns, and a dome gilded in 22 karat gold. I just wish they would let the public ascend the catwalk inside the dome - always wanted to do that.

Great place to spend a lazy afternoon walking the grounds and touring the interior. Take the guided tour if possible. You can find out about it on the first floor under the dome. This is one of the most beautiful state capitols in the country.
