“Great day of doing something out of the ordinary!”
Reviewed June 9, 2013

My husband and I, traveled with our friends to Cass, WV to hop aboard the steam engine to Bald Knob! The park itself is clean, and well kept, but pretty simple. The train ride was very enjoyable with some amazing views and educational information along the way. I would suggest that you bring a jacket because at an elevation of nearly 5000ft it is a bit chilly, even on a nice day! I would also suggest to bring drinks, and maybe a snack as the train does stop for about 30 minutes at Whittaker station as well as at Bald Knob and concessions are few, and a little pricey. (If you don't pack anything, make sure to bring a little cash for a refreshment at Whittaker station). If you are looking for something different to do, this fits the bill for an all day activity that is not very expensive!

I would love to go again sometime!

(Avoid wearing light colored clothes because the train puts off cinders and they do stain!)

“Brilliant Train ride with so much more”
Reviewed May 29, 2013

We spent our 20th Wedding anniversary in Cass, staying in a company house and taking the train ride up to Bald Knob where we had fabulous views. The company house was simply furnished, but very comfortable and with everything you need - bring your own food supplies. We did a self guided walk around the town, a guided tour of the workshops and also looked in the museum and watched the showcase film which puts everything in to perspective. The train ride up the mountain has a commentary with many interesting facts, although it was a little difficult to hear at times. There were stops at both Whittaker and at Bald Knob for about 30 minutes each, and at Whittaker there were examples of cabins the workers used to live in as well as other machinery. At Bald knob we were lucky enough to see two deer come out of the trees, quite unconcerned about the people around. It was cooler at the top of the mountain so be prepared. Well worth a trip and to do it justice you need a whole day. There was a fee for the train ride, and to stay overnight, but everything else is funded by donations.

“Very educational”
Reviewed May 27, 2013

Start with the Cass Showcase as it explains a lot of how the town got started, what's still there, etc... The locomotive shop guided tour is very good but there is a little walking involved - on the way to the shop, you stop to hear about the lumber mill. The museum is also very interesting. Incredible that except for the train ride, it's all freewill donations. We didn't take the train ride because we didn't plan very well but we'll do it next time. Next time I'd like to stay at one of the company houses, too. Well worth the time to go!

“Two switchbacks and great views”
Reviewed April 5, 2013

Ride the Cass up to Whittaker Station to explore the old logging camp. The steam engine makes it up the steep grade and has 2 switchbacks with lots of beautiful views along the way. Its cold on the mountain so be prepared for a drop in temperature. There is a snack bar at the top but you are better off packing your own picnic. Ride in the back to get some great views of the engine going around the curves. There is also a longer trip to Bald Knob.

“Beautiful area”
Reviewed March 25, 2013

A must do if you are in the Snowshoe area. The ride to the top is so beautiful. Be sure to take a boxed lunch and a jacket. Regardless of the time of the year it gets cold up on the mountain top.
