Loved the steam train ride, and also enjoyed walking around the old "company town" with restored houses where the employees of the "turn of the century" lumber operation lived. The train ride is especially scenic in early Oct when fall colors -- including many maple trees -- are at their peak. Also recommend walking or biking the Greenbier river trail. Its scenic and peaceful. Limited places to eat, a small restaurant and ice cream counter and small grocery. Beautiful country roads coming into Cass.

“Best place to be”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 7, 2012

We just went to Cass yesterday. We love it!! This was our second trip there and I think this was better than the first even though it doesn't get much better than this. Love everything about this place. The people, the trains, scenery just everything is absolutely spectacular!! Well worth the 5.5 hour drive!! And their prices don't beat you up either. Everything from food, lodging to the gift shop and train ride is very reasonable and affordable. Much better than anyplace we've ever been. Boy it was so hard to leave this place!! Wish we could stay forever :)

“The Engines are Amazing”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 2, 2012

I'd never been to Cass, had no desire to go but arranged the trip to take my father since he really wanted to see the Shay engines. I was pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed our visit. The sheer power of the engines is amazing.

We took two train rides…the Bluegrass Barbeque and the 4 hr trip to Bald Knob. The Bluegrass Barbeque was a ride to the Whittaker station where we had a dinner and enjoyed live music and then the return trip to the depot. The food was surprisingly good, there was a fire which was inviting due to the chilly weather and the return trip was cool because it was dusk due to the time of year that we were there.

The trip to Bald Knob was basically the trip to Whittaker station and then continuing on for about another 2 hrs to Bald Knob. I preferred the trip to Whittaker over the trip to Bald Knob. The switchbacks occur between the Whittaker station and the depot. But there were a few sensational views and track feats beyond the Whittaker station.

During the rides, you can walk around on your car during the trip but you cannot move between cars.

My biggest complaint would be that walking tours of the town and the maintenance shop are offered but there is not a set schedule. This may work for you if you’re going to spend several days in Cass but if you are just staying a day or two and plan on taking train rides, whether you have the opportunity to take one of these walking tours is up to chance.

“Great excursion to go on!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 1, 2012

Traveled to ride the on the Cass Mountain Railroad. Had beautiful weather for a fall weekend.
We stayed in Harrisonburg Va. because the park lodging was booked up. If you want to stay in the area, book early. Traveling to Cass WV we traveled out Route 250 out Staunton Va area. I would highly recommend that route coming off Route 81. It is full of twists and turns-high elevations. But in the end the trip was well worth it. Make sure that if you are going to do this trip, ride the train all the way to Bald Knob. The train ride is quite a fun adventure. The views are spectacular going up and from the top. We purchased a box lunch at their restaurant, it was really good. You get a sandwich, chips, fruit, dessert and a drink. You can carry coolers onto the train. We did carry a cooler where we stored our box lunch and bottles of water to keep them cool. Or pack your own picnic meal You can eat on the train or at one of the stops if you would like.to. We chose to eat on the train so we could walk around the areas where we stopped. There is a slide show about the history of the area, If you have time, make sure that you see the slide show. I would definently recommend anyone to go on this trip, It is a fun time for all ages!
