“Nice cabins except....”
Reviewed August 19, 2006

The SmokeHole cabins are beautiful but if you like animals it may not be for you. The owners dogs are kept in terrible conditions and it ruined our vacation time there. Most of the dogs didn't have water but the fell that did had putrid water. Their feces were piled over a foot high in the tiny cages that four were kept in. The other four were on short chains and only one had a doghouse, the others had to seek shelter under old tractors. Everything else there is so beautiful that it was a shame to see the dogs like that, otherwise I would have gone back for future vacations.

  • Liked — Beautiful surrounding
  • Disliked — The way the dogs were kept.
  • Tips/Secrets — SmokeHole area is beautiful, I just wouldn't stay at the SmokeHole cabins again

I read another review of this motel and was surprised that it was so negative.

My wife and I stayed THe Smoke Hole Cavern Motel for our honeymoon and we couldn't have found the people that ran it to be more friendlier. The rooms were very clean, a water canal ran continuous so it made sleeping very relaxing listening to the sound of water flowing through it, a nice gift shop was close to the room (can't seem to recall but I think there was a snack bar in the gift shop), and as an added treat there was a cave with hourly tours on site next to the motel. On down the road were Honey Moon cabins owned by the motel complete with heart shaped Jacuzzi. Prices for the Honey Moon Suites were a bit higher then the regular motel prices but all were reasonable. We plan on going back this year. Stores and other sight seeing spots are within a reasonable driving distance.

Our family was in the mountains of West Virginia for a vacation in July 2005. We stayed at the Smoke Hole Caverns Family Motel (at Smoke Hole Caverns near Seneca Rocks and Cabins, West Virginia because it looked new from the road. They advertise this motel as having air conditioning; however, there are NO controls in the room. My husband does not believe it is air conditioned but instead air pumped from the caverns. NO ONE is on the premises at night when you have a problem either. My husband called the manager several times because the toilet was stopped up. After he was questioned whether he was looking under the sink and in their supply room properly, a woman FINALLY came to bring us a plunger - when we also complained about the dampness and lack of cool air, she went somewhere and said she turned it down and it would "freeze us out in the morning". Even though the decorations were nice, the room smelled like a combination of fish/smoke/cavern - we do not know whether there was some sort of swamp cooler for all the rooms; however, we did not breathe well during our stay. The lady there was pushy and claimed it was "extremely cool in the room" and in fact insisted "the air was perfect" when we saw her the next morning. I got a sinus infection from sleeping there! Because you could not control the ventilation in the room and there was not a fan, you got truck noise all night long along the highway. I would NEVER stay here again.

This was the only place in WV we felt insulted. It is a shame these people do not seem to believe the customer is right. It is also a shame that the cabins and motel were built to look pretty, but there are no individual A/C controls in the rooms. This place was hazardous to our health.

We are NOT picky about where we stay. I just hope anyone with respiratory problems will read about this and NOT stay here. (We always have given B&B and places great reviews - See Hopkins Inn in Baltimore and Chester Arthur House in Washington DC and Natural Bridge.) Also see the other review we did of the trip to WV.
