Where to start? Went for dinner with family on short holiday to Berkeley Springs. Read the story of the restaurant and was intrigued. Nice to see people unafraid of religion in the workplace and public space. Owner (?) was surly when we arrived but waitress was friendly. Food arrived without too much delay. But really, it was terrible. Just awful. How to ruin a burger? Cook it to death and put it on a stale crumbly bun. (Meat tasted a little strange as well). The rest of the party had food that was obviously frozen and prepared (nuked to death) in a microwave. Rubbery dead chicken, "green beans" were a mess of slop, pizza was terrifying (serving frozen pizza is bad enough, but microwaving it???). Was the microwave frozen food to save money? Surely purchasing food items fresh and preparing them yourself couldn't be more expensive from buying them pre-prepared and frozen from some faceless restaurant supply company, could it? Travelers should avoid this ghastly food at all costs. Even a fast food drive through is of higher quality and better taste at a fraction of the cost.

Berkeley Springs is a quaint town in the panhandle of West Virginia. The diversity of businesses there go quite well with the diversity of people who live and visit there. Maria's Garden has the most wonderful rooms, they range from suites with jacuzzi baths to rooms with double beds and a shared bath. There is a room for what ever your looking for as well as the price range your looking for. A full breakfast comes with your stay. The food is Italian-American, and is all made right there in the family style kitchen.....right down to stuffing her own shells. I've been vistiting Maria's Garden for over 20 yrs. now and often visit Berkeley Springs to do just that.

My family has passed through Berkeley Springs a few times on our way to and from the University of Virginia, where I go to school. With the rather paltry selection of restaurants at which we can eat, we decided one night upon Marias, being attracted with the claims of Italian food and the religious aspect, as our family is Catholic and thought it would be quaint.

Quaint it ain't. Religious things filled the walls and halls. Rosaries for sale. A crucified Jesus on the cross staring down at us. A chapel upstairs. Now I go to church every week but I was weirded out by this over the top display.

Now the food: AWFUL. The sweet tea was good because you can't mess up drinks too much. The salads were pathetic, pale iceberg shards with a scant onion or tomato scattered about. I ordered pot roast: TERRIBLE. Gummy texture and tasted like card board. Mashed potatoes were obviously defrosted as was the corn (good amount of corn-water in the bowl). My parents were equally unimpressed, as my dad's crabcakes were pretty bad (even worse considering the cost) and served on that same terrifying sheet of iceberg lettuce.

I hear this place has a bed and breakfast...the beds looked good but the breakfast...not so much, I'm guessing. If it's a nice overnight stay and perhaps some salvation you're looking for come here. But for a meal or any sort of food, stay very far away.

We went to dinner at Maria's on President's Day weekend. We were 4 adults, 3 children, hungry and happy. It was about 6 pm on a Sunday night (President's Day weekend), and the restaurant was virtually empty. The dinner was terrible: long wait for simply inexcusable food.
The service was pleasant enough, but excruciatingly slow and not so well-informed. For example, when we asked whether the pasta was fresh, the waitress said Yes. When we asked further about it (trying to avoid any incidents with our egg-allergic guest), she said that it was dried pasta from a box, and that they boiled it fresh. The salads that were to come with our meals never appeared, which is probably for the best: the food was God-awful. The pizza was a low-quality FROZEN PIZZA. As hungry as we were, we couldn't stomach it. The pasta was equally inedible (stuffed shells and spaghetti). The place had been recommended to us as a good place to go with children; we're bewildered about that, given how long it took and the low quality food. The waitress did bring crayons and coloring books, which was a step in the right direction. The decor is over-the-top (Pope plates on display, rosaries for sale at the front register), but that has its own charms. Not so for the food and service. Avoid it!

Quaint alternative to your average hotel room. The free breakfast was not good, but there are near by restaurants to choose from. We had the suite; 2 rooms with a shared bath and kitchenette. Loved the neighborhood and the porch. Thanks Perry family!!!!

This is less of a restaurant & more of a shrine to the Virgin Mary. The service is S--L--O--W (i.e. after we ordered simple meals--subs & pasta-- it took close to 50 minutes to be served!)

Any residual Catholic guilt will make it hard for you to get up & leave... but you should.... the food is marginal at best.
