“Fun Pool, Average Hotel, Fair Service, Bad Breakfast”
Reviewed August 24, 2010

The Yakima Howard Johnson…pretty much the epitome of average in every sense of the word. The only exception would be the pool. It was cold, but rather unique, and my kids (girls 3 and 7) both enjoyed it immensely in so long as they could stand the cold (and we’re from Minnesota). The hotel lobby and rooms are fair at best. It was fairly clean, fairly modern, and the staff was fairly helpful. The pool was above average. It is an outdoor pool situated in the courtyard and set in a circular fashion with an artificial island in the middle. Half of the pool is deep (5 to 6 or 7 feet) and the other half is less than 2 feet. This was very convenient for a family with a 7 year old who can swim and 3 year old who can’t. Breakfast was…warm, please don’t expect much beyond that. All in all not a bad one night stay but I can’t honestly say I’d stay there again. Average all the way.

I've been staying at this property annually for 20 years through various incarnations. This was not my best stay. Reservation was mishandled, but they finally rectified it day of check in when I checked again. Housekeeping didn't restock well at all, shower curtain had a really nasty area on it and carpet stained. Sold out with youth sports teams, many of whom ran up and down the halls all night, played ball in the hall, screamed all day at the pool, tore the Do Not Disturb signs off people's doors and the adults not much better out yakking outside till midnight. Remote and TV inoperable, they fixed remote but didn't address the TV so when I got back from event around 10:30 on 2nd night, I called and they actually sent a guy up to adjust it. Bed and furnishings comfy, hot breakfast included. Prices went up. Ice machine out of order. Grounds well kept. They closed the restaurant but the lounge is still there.

I booked a block of 10 rooms for my sons soccer team for a tournament that was held in Yakima. We picked this hotel due to the fact that they boosted about having an outdoor pool. I had called the hotel a half dozen times to change names on the reservations and not once did anyone mention to me that the pool was closed. When we arrived in the 90 degree weather, read the big sign on the side of the hotel near the entrance "outdoor Pool" to find it empty, very disappointing. We tried to look for rooms at another hotel, but everything was full because of the tournament.

The staff was very friendly, however the hotel including the rooms and restraunt looked old even though they said they had just remodeled.

Also, we were unable to get out WiFi to work. This was a pain as we needed to be able to check game schedules for the fallowing days tournament.

We have stayed here before, like the location and rooms are nice, however it would be nice if they offered free breakfast and WiFi as most hotels do have these days.

We stayed here just one night. We were a little concerned about our motorcycles when someone pulled up next to ours - never left his vehicle and got on his phone - just staring at our bike. Not a problem - when we voiced our concern we were allowed to all park our bikes right by the front door where they would be watched!

We had drinks and something to eat - the food was fine - the bar / restaurant does not stay open late, so if you have a late arrival, plan accordingly. We ate breakfast in the restaurant the following morning and it was quite good.

Overall the rooms were quiet and clean. Staff we met were all friendly and nice. Especially nice was our bartender / server in the lounge.

My name is Laura Pitman and I got married June 28th, 2008 (last Saturday). My mother-in-law was nice enough to rent us a room at the Howard Johnson Hotel in Yakima, WA to spend our wedding night.

During the wedding reception, two of my bridesmaids snuck off and bought 2 dozen roses, some candles and some chocolates to surprise us with. They brought these things to the front desk of the Howard Johnson and asked the front desk person to please put them in our room. The front desk person did not even ask for our name, but instead assumed we were the only bride and groom staying there that night, when in fact there were 2 just-married couples staying there.

He had housekeeping put the 2 dozen roses, chocolates and candles in the wrong room and did not realize his mistake until we arrived at the hotel. He then sent housekeeping to retrieve our stuff from the other room and bring it to ours.

However, we only received 1 dozen roses and the candles. The question is, who got our other dozen roses and chocolates?

Also, after we checked into the hotel, we were coming back out to leave for a while, and were followed out to the car by an older guy who said he was the manager, who told us there was a bottle of champagne in our fridge. When we came back to our room, we looked all over and there was no fridge in our room, and no champagne.

One last problem, the AC was broken in our room and Saturday and Sunday the temperature was close to 100 degrees. We ended up leaving the room at 9:00 AM because we were extremely hot and uncomfortable.

The bottom line is that we are very unhappy with the way we were treated on our wedding night and do not think we should have to pay for that room. What happened is extremely unprofessional and does not say much for the quality or competence of the people employed at the Howard Johnson in Yakima, WA.
