I stayed at the Winthrop Inn for three days on a mountain biking trip. (There are some fine trails in the mountains surrounding Winthrop and Twist.) Conditions were challenging because of the forest fires that were raging throughout central Washington and Oregon—the air was filled with smoke. Nevertheless, the inn was comfortable and pleasant. My room was clean and had a little balcony. "Breakfast" isn't worthy of the name, however—it consisted of some muffins and a choice of tea or coffee, and you have to take it back to your room. It goes without saying that there's no adjoining restaurant, as Winthrop's restaurant selection is dismal. Breakfast in town at a sit-down restaurant commands prices that might raise the eyebrows of people visiting from New York City. I ended up going to the supermarket in Twisp and picking up food for meals. The deli there is good and the cheese selection is remarkable: there's a distributor who comes in from Seattle and brings some remarkably good cheeses, like a fabulous Tomme de Crayeuse from France and a São Jorge from the Azores.
