We stopped on our way through Winthrop-- on rare visits, we usually go to the Old Schoolhouse Brewery with a deck facing the river but it was closed on a Tuesday. We were mostly looking for beer, something to eat, and a nice place to take a break outside on a gorgeous day. We had never been to this place but the deck looked inviting and the place was packed. The atmosphere was fabulous, and the beer and very tasty chips and salsa came quickly. We split a standard burger, which was pretty good when it arrived (we are not the most demanding diners in the world) with nice big slabs of carrot garnish and lots of grilled onion. Service seemed slow, but the place was very busy and we were enjoying ourselves after a very long drive....after a couple of beers, we thought it was one of the best burgers in the world.

So, do not be in a hurry, go on a beautiful sunny day and start out with a beer or two.

We may be curious to try the rustic-sounding hotel in the future. We usually camp out, so anything with a roof and an inside toilet is like the Ritz.

We recently ate breakfast at the Duck Brand Hotel. I absolutely love the atmosphere of the outside dining deck! However, our food was less than average. Definitely not worth the money! I had the omelet with ham and cheese . It was just scrambled eggs covered in cheese and ham bits. Perhaps lunch and dinner are better, according to other comments on this review site. I would say, maybe come for a drink on the deck. But don't waste the money on a meal, there is a good chance you will be disappointed. Sorry Duck Brand. Maybe think about getting a new chef or give him a cook book.

We always camp when we come to Winthrop so I don't know anything about the hotel. I can tell you that I stopped in one day at their restaurant and had a cream puff/eclair. It had to weigh over a pound and was amazing! The cream puff shell is filled with vanilla pastry cream which is topped with whipped cream. Another piece of cream puff shell tops it off which is glazed with dark chocolate. This is definitely a knife and fork experience and a great way to spend a few calories.

We stayed in the rooms provided at the Duck Brand last winter. When we arrived, the room had not been cleaned, and even had dirty plates with food, and used linens on the bed. We had arrived late, so had no recourse.

The next day we complained, and when we returned from our day's activities, the room had still not been cleaned! Although they gave us a different room, they offered no recompense for dirty sheets and a filthy room.

No more needs to be said.

Lovely, quirky little place (mind the steps coming down to the street!) with an excellent menu, tasty beer (Moose Drool recommended) and friendly service. We arrived mid-afternoon too late for lunch, so decided on a pudding each instead. It took my husband an hour to eat a portion of cherry pie and ice cream, which he pronounced the best he'd ever tasted. Much later on, after a fantastic dinner, we retired to our room above the restaurant expecting to be kept awake by the noise from the other diners - not so.

It has to be said that the bed was not the most comfortable and the bathroom floor tiles very loose (we ended up wearing some of them on the bottoms of our shoes), but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Winthrop. Unfortunately we could not do justice to the breakfasts as we had eaten so much the night before!

The Hotel: Loved the creaky wooden floors outside the 5 or 6 rooms they have up above the restaurant. The rooms are kinda old-fashioned, more in an 1870's way than a 1970's way (which is a good thing, especially in this old west town). Large sleeping area, clean sheets, nearly period furniture, and a cool little veranda to take-in the night or morning air. The bathrooms were dated, but the water pressure was high, the hot water flowed freely, the towels were clean and soap, etc., was accounted for. For the money the rooms were great, the location excellent, and the experience well worth it.

The restaurant: Lunch/dinner was average, with a long service wait being the visit-to-visit dependable feature. However, it should be noted that the server(s) were nice, and the one who waited on us was completely sweet. Plus, you're in Winthrop, and likely on vacation or at least taking it easy, so chill and enjoy your company. Salad was better than any I've had elsewhere in ages. Breakfast was very good. Large portions, excellent quality, and quick

FYI: At this time (May 27, 2009), the hotel and restaurant is for sale ($1,399,000 anyone?). Dunno for how long it's been for sale, or when it will sell, but heads-up, as a sale will mean at least *some* inevitable changes.
