“A great stop on a historic highway.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2012

If you ride a motorcycle (or drive a car and love wonderful scenery) in the Pacific North West you will be very familiar with Highway 20 near the Canadian border that passes through the North Cascade mountains. Only open in the summer the North Cascades run is amazing starting at Sedro Wolley and ending at Winthrop Washington. Winthrop is a western style town with wooden sidewalks and a collection of great shops and cafe's. Every time I have gone over the Highway 20 run I have stayed at the Hotel Rio Vista in Winthrop. It is one of the few hotels that I always call ahead and make reservations because it fills quickly in the summer and is often booked weeks in advance for special events. The rooms are a western style motif and the. Big draw of the hotel is that every room has a view of the Methow River. Although not what you would call "upscale" the rooms are spacious and well appointed. The staff are helpful and friendly and go out of their way to make your experience a good one. The hotel is well located within walking distance of several good cafe's and the center of town. It's hard not to fall in love with Winthrop and the Hotel Rio Vista. I have stayed there about a half a dozen times and will stay there again with friends this summer.

Room Tip: I like the second floor rooms for their view but all rooms are good.

We booked a room here based on other reviews and not wanting to pay more than double for a room at Sun Mountain. We checked in right after the town had lost power due to a thunder storm. After getting through the dark hallway, we were happy to see a lot of natural light coming through the big sliding door and window which overlook the river. Our balcony was roomy and fun to hang out on while we waited for the storm to clear. The county had the power back on in about 2 hours and we settled in for the night.

The room was nicely appointed and the bathroom was clean. It's not luxurious but had everything we needed. Seattles Best coffee for the in room coffee maker was a welcome touch! The walls were pretty thin but fortunately our neighbors settled down at a reasonable hour and we slept well.

The town of Winthrop is adorable and we loved being able to walk around right from our hotel. We would definitely stay there again. Be sure to go to the Riverside Grill for a great breakfast!

The location is great, close to down town and right on the river, the rooms are nice, updated since a rebuild in 2002. The only issue was our sink in our room did not drain well, other than that it is a nice hotel I would stay at again

We had a double queen room at the Hotel Rio Vista, and were happy with our selection. We were on the top floor, and had a balcony overlooking the river (as do all rooms). The room with adjoining bathroom, is quite small, but carefully built-in shelves and furniture give you everything you need. Just a flight of steps down and you're a short walk from downtown Winthrop, with stores and restaurants. The river is loud, but the windows shut out the sound completely, but we left the window open at night for ventilation - the sound of the river is quite soothing. The lady at the front desk was very pleasant.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the top floor.

Neat room with a nice location at the edge of Winthrop. Walk into Winthrop to eat or shop. Room overlooks the river. Ok view but loved the sound of the rapids while sleeping. Get your AAA discount.

This is the perfect get away, right in town, a short walk to the coffee shop in the morning and a nice walk around the small but great little town of Wintrop WA. first thing in the morning before the town wakes up. I enjoyed that a whole lot, the little town comes alive in the day time but clams down by night. Lots of good places to eat and drink.
The hotel was clean with all the basic you need in a room, how every the TV could use a up date. Each room had it own balcony with a view of the river. Will be going back for sure!
