When we visit a community for a while, it's fun to learn a little about it's history. Shafer's has pioneer buildings filed with artifacts or dressed to show you life in pioneer times.

Winthrop is a charming tourist attraction with wooden sidewalks, false-fronted buildings, and shops marketing mostly to tourists. So it is a real treat to visit the Shafer Museum (open Memorial Day to Labor Day) and discover displays that really tell you about the life and lifestyles of the pioneers. The aged and rusty equipment from early mining and agriculture are labeled and the explanations are accurate. Well worth a visit.

We missed it last year. This is so great. We were able to see all the buildings and displays. There are so many donations of memorabilia it is hard to comprehend how it all got there. Don't miss it up on the hill.

From the road, you barely notice this place. It is once you climb up the block that you realize this is a wonderful spacious step into the past. You begin with the huge mining equipment where kids will have fun poking in and out of the machinery as well as wonder if they could still find gold.

Then you wander over into the whole rebuilt village of wood buildings. School house is a great stop with kids. Adults will sneak a photo op in front of the old telephone boards. Each building takes time and several pics. The volunteers will share stories about some of the people who lived in these buildings. In fact all of the buildings and equipment were moved into this location which is another great story to hear.

Plan to spend 20-30 minutes here. You'll also have some news sunset views from up there.

Check out the petrified tree with the gun embedded in it. Lots of exhibits that would make the American Pickers jealous!!
