“Lunch & Dinner”
Reviewed October 11, 2012

We had a chance to eat twice at Sun Mountain, once at dinner and the next day for lunch. On both days the food was good if unremarkable, but the service made it seem much worse. There were never enough people in the dining room to justify long waits, but it did give us time to notice two other tables that were having trouble with their orders also. One table not only had the wrong pizza delivered, but their dinner salad came with a large portion of plastic wrap that had been mixed in with the lettuce.

For a family gathering this is not a bad place to eat, but otherwise the valley offers better choices and more reasonable prices if you go down the mountain a ways.

This resort almost has it all - beautiful location, excellent food, tons of activities to keep active families happy. The staff in the activities shop went out of their way to explain the bike trails and what would work for a 7 year old (bring your own bike for any child under 10). Debra (otherwise known as Red), who runs the stables, is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. She is the definition of hospitality and pure kindness. Also, the restaurant staff is professional and quick on their feet. And the Cabin Manager will also go out of his way to show you the local beaver or get a boat ready for your use.

However, don't expect a friendly "Welcome to Sun Mountain", when you walk through the front doors of the main lodge. The reception staff were so engrossed in their own conversations, that they didn't bother to look up ANY of the times we walked through the front door. Only the Sat. am concierge seemed the least bit interested in helping us with our dinner reservations and questions.

However icy the reception staff is, expect it even cooler in the spa. I inquired if "shower facilities' were available and the person working in the spa check-in, peered over her glasses and asked "why are you not a guest here?" As a matter of fact, I was a $300+ paying guest, staying in the cabins which are a 1.5 mile drive down a steep hill and I didn't want to have to go back and get cleaned up for dinner if shower facilities were available. She informed me that due to the timing of the appointments, shower facilities in the rooms were not available for use and that I could use the basement shower next to the fitness room. If there had not been a 24 hour cancellation provision, I would have cancelled my appointment due to the rudeness of this person. Also, the treatment rooms open up over the lobby entrance and any noise, weddings, parties, etc. will drown out any relaxing thoughts you might have.

We loved our cabin by the lake, but it is a 1.5 mile drive (up a very steep hill) to the main lodge. Also, a wedding party had booked the majority of the cabins - why were we placed smack dab in the middle and not off to one of the end cabins? and proceeded to party, party, party into the wee hours 2 of the nights we were there. It would have been nice if reservations would have mentioned this at the time of booking.

While families have been coming to this spot for 30 years, management might want to think about a refresher course in hospitality for it's reception and spa staff. Have them spend a day in the stables - it will be well worth it.

I am so very sorry for the "icy" service you received from my Receptionists in both the Spa and Front Desk. I appreciate so very much that you have alerted me to this and I am taking care of it. We have become known for our friendly hospitality, such as you received from Red at the stables and Dave at the cabins.

I will have this handled in short order!

After driving the southern part of the Cascades loop, we were very happy to arrive at this lodge seemingly in the middle of nowhere. We drove the 5 miles up the hill from the highway and were pleasantly surprised at such a casually luxurious lodge perched on the edge of the mountain. It is obvious that there is a lot of attention to detail at this lodge. The rooms were well appointed especially the bathroom. When I called (almost a year in advance), I was immediately upgraded to a room with a gorgeous view of the valley. We had room # 304, which had 2 queens- one of the best views there. No TV anywhere at the lodge except in the TV room and bar. The free wi fi was extremely spotty on my IPAD. The two options for eating there are the bar and the dining room. The dining room menu is limited and a bit pricey(AAA 4 star but mostly due to the wine). We opted to eat in the bar. But we wanted to experience of the dining room so we had a very nice pricey breakfast. Ask for a table "on the ledge" for a spectacular view. These tables are first come first served, no reservations for them. If you can't get one on the ledge, ask for table #8 which has the same view and an additional one out the side as it sits in a corner. One other hint--at dusk take a drive down to the corrals as they let the horses out in a huge pasture and the deer come and graze with the horses. Lots of picture ops. We found the local town of Winthrop to be somewhat unfriendly so we didn't drive in for dinner. We did get breakfast at Rocking Horse Bakery and it was good, not great.

Room Tip: Ask for #304 is two queen beds will do. You will want a mountain view.

Great room, views, spa and especially great trail ride and breakfast. My wife remembers best the french dip in the smaller restaurant. Also great meal and amazing view from the main dining room. We were as Sun Mountain five years ago and still talk about it often. The year was not 2012. My only choice below. Actually summer 2005.

Room Tip: Don't miss the trail ride and breakfast.

We stayed here in late August for our 30th wedding anniversary. We splurged and stayed in the Mt. Robinson guest rooms as from the photo, the room looked pretty spectacular. While the room was nice, it was definitely dated and needing a bit of a facelift- silly basket art on the wall, sad little gas fireplace, and awkward Jacuzzi tub. Also, the AC system was either freezing or off, making it super difficult to sleep as we'd wake up either cold or roasting, having to constantly adjust our covers. Had we not received a package of 3 nights for the price of 2, we would have felt we did not get our moneys-worth- particularly having just stayed in Sun River Oregon in an absolutely gorgeous room at much lower rate. The view from the room was definitely the selling point- although I'm not sure we couldn't have had a similar view from the lodge.

As far as the dining room- again you are eating there for the view, not the incredibly overpriced food. When we pay $150.00 for dinner (less $10.00 for one glass of wine), we expect to be blown away. Not only was the service incredibly slow, the food was just nothing special. And, for breakfast, same thing. We were excited to have the farro pancakes, only to find them nearly raw in the middle. How hard is it to properly cook a pancake? Yet, because breakfast was included, we did not complain. Contrast this to the AMAZING places available to eat in Twisp and Winthrop. From the Twisp Orchid to the Rocking Horse Bakery in Winthrop, we quickly learned where we should be eating!

Room Tip: Would check out the lodge next time as the outside guest rooms were not that spectacular for the pri...

The drive to this spectacular resort is worth the trip. Great rooms with BIG views. Wonderful room layout with jet tubs, frig, in room coffee, fireplace and roomy deck. Some of the most comfortable beds too. We enjoyed a good meal at the Lodge's restaurant all dishes using local products. A bar with lighter fare was also available to guests. Both dining venues offered breath taking views as well. Grounds were beautifully landscaped, nice public spaces inside and out, including a terrific pool area.

This was our first trip as a family to Winthrop, WA and Sun Mountain Lodge. We drove over the North Cascades Highway to get there. The drive was excellent and well worth the trip by itself. I ,however , would recommend this drive more in the fall , when the leaves are changing color. We arrived at the Lodge late in the afternoon and were greeted immediately. The staff was very friendly and helpful, even though this receptionist was new. Check in was quick and easy. We went immediately to the activity center to make plans for our stay. All of the activities were listed and there was a large selection of outdoor activities to choose from. We elected to take a trail ride on the horses nearby, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I have ridden extensively in the past and thought I would be bored, and that was not the case at all. After checking in we went to our room. It looked updated and was very clean. I am very picky about my mattress and can not say enough good things about the quality of the beds there. The kids checked out the pool and hot tub and had a great time. There was also lots of indoor things to do if the weather hadn't been good. I would highly recommend a trip to Winthrop if you love outdoor activities (mountain bikes, horses, swimming, fishing, etc) The only bad thing I had to say about our stay was the cost. In the future, unless there was a special offered, I would probably stay somewhere nearby so i could afford a longer stay. if money is not your main concern, by all means stay here, they do a excellent job.
