Our families stayed for a long weekend for a business/family vacation. The cottages adjacent to the resort are great and the view and natural environment are gorgeous! My kids and I caught hundreds of fish (all released) right off the docks in front of the resort on Puget sound. The food was unreal and the staff is super friendly. can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: Rooms near the grass, picnic, barbecue area are great for large family gatherings.

The Alderbrook resort sits on highway 106 in Union, on the Hood Canal of the Olympic Penninsula. It consists of a main lodge and cottages. It has all the Northwest comfort, trees, water, and clean air. We had only stayed at the main lodge once in the many times we had stayed here. The jewel of this resort is the cottages. When our kids were young, we'd rent the 2-bedroom cottages, bringing our own food and preparing it daily in the fully-equipped kitchen. Now that our kids are in college, we rent the one-bedroom cottage, just the two of us. We cooked in both the kitchen, and availed ourselves of the outdoor propane BBQ. (There are two). We stay only during off-season or for specials- the on-season prices are too high for this economy. We are on their email list and wait for specials, and if one is good, we go for it. The restaurant is fine, comfortable, and the food is good, but over-priced for what you get. One could find oneself saving at the main lodge for a small room, but easily exceeding the budget for 3 meals a day at the restaurant.

The spa is fantastic; my wife had two treatments spread over two of the three days we stayed there. Unlike the restaurant, the spa prices are competative with other spas out there, and often there are packages that include spa discounts, or sometimes there are spa discounts just because.

Though we were here for pleasure, both of us had a little business; the internet was fast and never "threw us off" like other hotels' internet services have done to us in the past. It was available throughout the cottage wherever we decided to work.

We heartily recommend this resort; though we've stayed only off-season, one can see that there are lots to do on the water in-season, as we walked along the deserted dock and closed boat rental houses- the calm before the summer storm. Their motto is right- "get away without going away". For us it is a mere 37 miles; for Seattlelites the trip is longer, but worth it.

Room Tip: Select the cottages if you don't mind cooking your own meals. Save the restaurant for a special...

The beautiful resort matches the setting. It was my birthday and staff went out of their way to make me feel pampered. It was only a one-night stay but felt like a mini-vacation in the welcoming room, lodge-like buildings, and majestic setting in the woods along the Hood Canal. I loved the window seat! We spent time in the swimming pool and hot tub too. Ah! And the food was also excellent. We had dinner in the contemporary lounge and breakfast in the restaurant by windows overlooking the canal. All in all, a magical time.

The setting is absolutely gorgeous (quintessential Washington at its best). The rooms are beautiful - I especialy love the windowseat for curling up with a book or just admiring the view. The lobby is wonderful, very "upscale NW lodge" and the grounds are simply amazing. I love hanging out by the fire pit and taking in the view. Unfortunately, this is where the positive review ends....

We hae stayed here twice and had a similar experience both times - lots of noise and no sleep. The first visit, we stayed for two nights. The first night, a Saturday, there was a wedding. In the afternoon, we were relaxing in the grassy area enjoying the day. Then the bridal party started arriving for photos and the staff was setting up for the event. As someone else mentioned, we felt like wedding crashers. This is a small resort and the common area is really only large enough for a wedding party, not other hotel guests. We felt awkward hanging out there, so we went back to our room. That night, the loud (I mean bass-pounding loud) music from the reception ruined our evening experience. The music died down around midnight but then drunk party goers hung out by the fire pit well into the wee hours of the morning. Needless to say, we didn't get much sleep. The next night, a Sunday, was indeed much quieter and probably a better time to stay at the hotel if you want a relaxing, quiet night.

3 years later we returned for a one-night's stay. It was the Friday of Memorial Day weekend. Again, we spent the evening listening to loud music, so loud that I could hear the lyrics. And again, when the music finally died down, drunk partiers spent the remainder of the night by the fire pit, keeping us up all night. When I finally fell asleep, more loud guests woke me up yelling up and down the hallway at 3 am. I finally fell asleep again, only to be awakened at 7 am by a barking dog.

This leads me to another issue with Alderbrook - there are dogs everywhere. I love dogs. I have a dog. However, I don't appreciate other people's dogs begging for my food as I relax on the patio. I also don't apreciate listening to someoen's dog barking non-stop in my pricey hotel room. When I complained about the neighbor's dog barking this last trip, the hotel did move us further down the hall, however, the way the hotel is situated, you hear everything no matter where you are. When I called the front desk a second time they said they would call the owners, who had obviously left their dog in the room alone. A while later, the dog was quiet and we breathed a sigh of relief. But then, after a long night listening to partiers and loud music, I was awakened at 7 am by the same dog barking incessently for well over an hour. When I mentioned it to the front desk as we checked out, the girl just shrugged her shoulders. This resort looks like and is priced as a peaceful place, one where you can really relax and unwind from city life and experience all the NW has to offer. Unfortunately, it's not what it appears to be.

We have also been to Alderbrook on two occasions for lunch and had a much better experience. Once we ate in the restaurant and once in the outdoor beach cafe, which is only open during the summer. I highly recommend this aproach - just come to Alderbrook for the afternoon. Enjoy the restaurant and relax on the beautiful grounds; then go home.

Room Tip: Stay here mid-week!!!

From the moment we arrived until the moment we left we felt very pampered. It was the perfect NYE event. The room was beautiful, the beds were very comfortable, and all the little added extras made the trip perfect. The view of the Puget Sound made for a very nice walk around the resort. The restaurant was very nice, the staff very knowledgeable, and the food was amazing (a little expensive but worth the cost). Overall I would highly recommend taking the time to visit.

We had a harrowing drive to the hotel as an unexpected snowfall made getting to the resort tricky with a couple of slides into the ditch and guardrail and so stuck in the snow once we had to be towed out. It was scary and they closed the road after we arrived. We made it to the resort and we utilized the valet service, we were happy to get into the hotel and were able to check in an hour early. It turns out that the day we arrived, that night and the next day as we were checking out, the hotel was on a generator so the lobby could be used as a refuge from our flashlghted room. They gave us a room on the first floor so we could avoid the stairs and served us a tray of coffee since we could not use any electricity in our room. The restaurant had power and we had a nice dinner in the bar and took a glass of wine into the lobby to sit by the fire. The staff could not have been more accomodating, they made popcorn and hot cider and took the kids that were there down to a showing of The Incredibles. They opened up an outlet so we could charge our cell phones for the drive out the next day. Guests were friendly and most had similar stories on how hard it was to get there that night. Lots of trees were down which made the drive double or triple the amount of time. The staff some of whom had to stay, were happy to show us the property and bring out extra blankets since the rooms did not have heat. It was our anniversary and turned out to be a nice unplugged getaway. Unfortunately some of the amenitiies like the pool and the hot tub were not electrified so we could not use them. We paid full price for the night but would love to have been offered a discount on a return trip. We would gladly come back when the weather is better.

Room Tip: I am not sure if we had the room that we booked as it seemed if there had not been snow all over we...
