The place is small, just few tables in two different levels. A wide wooden stair case with few steps leads to the lower level, from where you can the kitchen. The upper level overlooks the lower level through a rail. The lighting is not very bright, which is good. The predominant color is a warm darkish red. We liked the long drapes hanging in different parts of the restaurant adding to the charm of the place and the red brick walls. We really liked the atmosphere and decor, although I can see how the decor could remind how the whole decoration could remind an old French brothel, but I did not mean this as a negative. The server, a student from the University of Puget Sound, was excellent! The food was excellent, too, both in taste and high quality. However, there are some things in the menu that did not live up to the description on the menu. For example, the “croutes de fromage” is described as Gruyere cheese melted between slices of sourdough soaked in a sweet white wine sauce and grilled to perfections served with apricot marmalade and a bit of sweet. The long description did not hide the fact that it was a grilled cheese sandwich, so we were expecting that, but, we thought it would be the best and most interesting grilled cheese sandwich that we had, and it was not. The rest of the starters and entrees were very very good. The salmon and the steak were cooked perfectly and the tasted amazing. Overall, we do recommend this place and when out trips bring us back to Tacoma, we will make sure we go back.
