“horrible owner”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 28, 2009

To make a long story short, we went in ordered one salad and they divided it into two, without asking us, We thought they were doing it to be friendly, instead they charged us $2 without our permission. They demanded we pay the $2, even though we never asked for it. Bad move in this economy, to alienate a paying customer, our bill was well over $100, but to nickle and dime your customers is just wrong.

“Good food but ambience can spoil it”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 6, 2007

My wife and I have eaten at Primo Grill over half a dozen times in the last year. We find it a restaurant of contrasts. On one hand, it's attractively decorated with cute seating, warm colors on the walls, and attractive fixtures. On the other, it has been cool and drafty on several occasions we've eaten there. (80% of the patrons wore jackets through dinner one night.) The food is very good -- occasionally inspired -- nouveau American/Italian at a reasonable price. I had a pumpkin ravioli in the fall that was wonderful. Their pizza is thin crust with some gourmet/Italian topping offerings - very good and recommended. But service has been negligent on several occasions, and event-spoilingly bad twice. Problems like waiting 15 minutes to get water or be able to order once seated, a quick-to-make dessert taking 20 minutes to arrive, abandonment half-way through dinner making it hard to order more drinks, etc. Occasionally the service has been fine, but it varies and is not necessarily bad just on busy nights.

They have a nice, modest wine selection including by-the-glass offerings with half-priced Wednesdays. What they don't tell you, is that the half-priced wine bottle only applies to the first bottle (even if you have a table of 4 or more) and doesn't apply if a couple gets pizza as one of their mains. (Even though the pizza is within $1 of the price of other mains that "count.")

We WANT to like Primo Grill - it's cute and the food is good at a reasonable price - but 2 out of 3 times we leave the restaurant annoyed: either the service, the temperature, their nitpicking on half-priced wine night, etc. I suspect other patrons have felt the same, because while the restaurant continues to be occasionally uncrowded or filled with a relatively older crowd (50s-60s) for that area, all the neighboring restaurants are packed.

So when we pick a restaurant for dinner, we now tend to look elsewhere for an enjoyable evening dinner. I would suggest trying Primo Grill f you live in Tacoma and have exhausted the other restaurants in the genre, but be prepared for a few quirks.
