Go for breakfast and you won't leave hungry but splurge and get a heated cinnamon role with butter to share. They are full dinner plate sized. Decor is dingy and dated but breakfast foods are good. Something deteriorates when you try dinner and the waitstaff could care less. Don't go after 3pm. Kudos for offering a military discount.

We were in the area to get an oil change for my son's car and when they were done it was lunch time! And as we love non-chain restaurants we were happy to see this in the middle of a bunch of car dealerships.
Loved the atmosphere immediately!

We were seated promptly and drink orders taken right away. As we were waiting to have our order taken we took in the views! The views were the huge portions that were being served to other patrons. lol

Sadly I don't remember what all we ordered but the portions were so huge that all of us took home the leftovers.

I would go back!!

I'm giving the Homestead Restaurant a Poor rating because it was hard to get past the dinginess of the place. The restaurant resembles a red barn. It is sandwiched in between car lots in undesirable South Tacoma. The décor is country, which is fine, but it is in need of a complete cleaning and overhaul - even the concrete leading to the front doors is black with grime. The entry is supposed to be a bakery but there were just a few items in the display case, and other than the huge cinnamon rolls, things didn't look fresh or appetizing. There are benches lined up in rows that resemble pews in a church - very odd. The carpet in the restaurant is filthy! It's hard to sit and enjoy food when one is surrounded with such disgusting grime. However, for the sake of writing a Trip Advisor review, we stayed. Plus, we were really hungry. The food was pretty good. Portions were large. Breads appeared homemade. I had the Club Sandwich with the soup. It was a Potato Ham soup which was spiced so heavily with a green herb (?) that it was uneatable. Service was a bit slow. The waitress failed to check with us to see if the food was o.k. When we were finished, she removed the full soup bowl and didn't ask if there was a problem with it. (2 strikes for the waitress) The meal - Senior breakfast, Club Sandwich, and coffees came to $24.65 before tip. This restaurant has been there for such a long time. It has decent hearty food . It just needs a good cleaning and update. I mean, there's charming old-fashioned country, then there is just old-fashioned dirty junk.

My Spousal Unit and I are "empty nesters", and with the kids on the other side of the country, we usually go out to eat on Thanksgiving. The last three years, we ended up with either crummy imitations of homestyle meals, or overly-gourmet interpretations of the traditional favorites.

This year, we decided to try out an old favorite, The Homestead Restaurant and Bakery, for Thanksgiving and we were very glad we did! Everything was indeed "homemade", and delicious. I started with the amazing "meatloaf vegetable soup", which may sound weird, but it was the best soup I've had in years. We opted for turkey dinners, and the turkey was carved, roasted, and perfect. Mashed potatoes, stuffing, and gravy were also superb. They were out of rolls, so we were "forced" to make do with outstanding biscuits instead.
Great, friendly service, and great food...This will probably be our new Thanksgiving Dinner tradition!

We LOVE diner breakfasts and this was only mediocre. Coffee was what you would expect. Potatoes were actually wonderful. But waffle tasted like a frozen waffle, omelette was flat and cheddar cheese tasted like american. And the home made biscuit was doughy.

Service was friendly and speedy. I would never go back -- Dennys or IHOP is better!
