Owner description: Celebrating 81 years, Tacoma Art Museum is an anchor in the city’s downtown and a gathering place for connecting people through art via thoughtful exhibitions, exciting events, and enriching programs. The museum’s collection of more than 4,500 works emphasizes the art and artists of the Northwest and broader western region. Highlights of the collection include: -the largest retrospective museum collection of glass art by Tacoma native Dale Chihuly on continued view; -the largest collection of studio art jewelry by Northwest artists; -key holdings in 19th century European and 20th-century American art; -one of the finest collections of Japanese woodblock prints on the West Coast; and -the Haub Family Collection, one of the nation’s premier western American art collections, with approximately 300 works spanning 200 years. The Haub Family Collection is the first major museum collection of western American art in the Pacific Northwestern region. Named by USA Today as one of the “Top 10 Great Places to See Art in Smaller Cities,” the museum has developed a national reputation for presenting art in a thought-provoking yet accessible manner, with a strong commitment to Northwest art through its acquisition and exhibition programs. In addition to dynamic exhibitions, nationally touring shows, and historical retrospectives, TAM serves the diverse communities of the region through innovative programming and learning opportunities for all ages, including free community events. TAM is located in Tacoma’s Museum District, near the Museum of Glass, the Washington State History Museum, Children’s Museum of Tacoma, and historic Union Station.

We saw an Eric Carle exhibit. Colorful and interesting. I continue to marvel at what "Art" is. Some of it looks like any 2nd grader could do, yet it is valuable because it is from a well known artist. Other permanent pieces give me the same thought. That is why art is in the eye of the beholder. The Chihuly glass exhibit is well worth seeing. TAM is one of four museums within walking distance of each other, and a fun way to spend some time.

I wasn't very impressed with this visit to the Tacoma Art Museum. The central courtyard is a wonderful visual space for art display, but was empty. I remember there being some Dale Chihuly niijima floats some year ago that went very well with the space. Two galleries were down for the assembly of new exhibits, but there was a nice room of Dale Chihuly glass. An exhibit of drawings by sculptors didn't seem to have much focus. An exhibit of Pacific Northwest jewelry was tucked off in a little corner and there were some cases of glass art. There were empty spaces that should be filled with more art.

Continues to delight with creative installations. Love Leroy. Would like postcards from the exhibits, however.

Downtown Tacoma has several very nice attractions in the downtown area and the Tacoma Art Museum is definately one. I have drove from Seattle off and on for several years to see exhibits ( like the recent Warhol exhibit ) and have really enjoyed what they had to offer. The space is smaller and more intimate than the Seattle Art Museum, similar to the Bellevue art museum. However, I think that the exhibits at Tacoma Art Museum have always been better/more significant than those I've seen in Bellevue.

If your making a day or overnight trip to Tacoma I would recommend checking in to see if they have any good exhibits going on. Admission is $10 for adults. Within short walking distance to Museum of Glass. Good combo in my opinion.

Thank Robert V
