“Good food quickly”
Reviewed April 2, 2013

A 'home-feel' local restaurant named after the first Narrows Bridge - there's some history here. Close to the military bases and the hospital -- makes for a close in variety stop for solo or meeting friends for breakfast or lunch. We've been there many times, meeting there prior to a motorcycle ride. SoS is good, actually, it's better than in the mess-hall. Filled me up and lasted past lunch into dinner. Wait staff are quick, polite, friendly and attentive. Bonus, I didn't have to clean my silverware before eating. Good stop for road warriors or groups of friends to meet.

“Good food, large portions, nice staff”
Reviewed March 20, 2013

We recently ate here while out running errands. My husband ordered a breakfast scramble and I ordered the chicken fried steak. Both were pretty good. I would say better than you're average diner fare, definitely better than the chain breakfast diners in the area. The staff was great and the cook even whipped up a small mickey mouse shaped pancake for our toddler, which was a very nice touch. We will definitely head back here again.

“The Decline and Fall of Gerties”
Reviewed November 27, 2012

Galloping Gerties (Which is NOT named for the 1st version of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, by the way) has become a lot like a long-running TV show which "jumped the shark" many seasons ago. Even though it has become laughably awful, people still tune in every week out of habit. Gerties has a great location in the Tillicum neighborhood of Lakewood (No, it's NOT in Tacoma, folks!), outside the gates of Camp Murray (WA National Guard HQ), and across the freeway from Madigan Army Hospital. Tons of fellow greensuiters have kept this place going over the decades, when it used to be the kind of greasy spoon that had wisecracking waitresses, and really great food. Those days are long gone.
Today's version of Galloping Gerties features average at best chow. Their formerly-awesome SOS used to be worth risking a clogged artery, but now it has the flavor and consistency of "mystery meat-studded wallpaper paste". Sandwiches and fries contain enough dripping oil and grease to lubricate a small Kia sedan. Coffee tastes like weak Folger's brew that your grandma served back in the 60s...and usually is poured into dirty, stained coffee mugs.
Still, the usual offset of a fading greasy spoon is that the food is plentiful and cheap. Well, Gerties serves moderately-large portions, but the prices are way out of proportion to the quality. On my last (truly, last!) visit, I ordered an omelet, nothing fancy, ham and cheese, and skipped the potatoes and toast. I added a cup of their reliably-terrible coffee because it was cold and raining outside. The check for this dismal meal, before any tip, mind you, came to almost $20. Add in the delightful aspect of my waitress coughing up a lung, either unchecked or into the same hand which she handled dishes of food, and that cinched my decision to never, ever return to Gerties. Yep, I have finally broken that nasty habit. There are SO MUCH BETTER alternatives in the Lakewood area (try Carr's on Bridgeport Way, or the Moon Rise Cafe at the Lakewood Towne Center), to ever put up with Gerties again.
