“Rude Staff”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 24, 2007

Staff didn't even say hello, they were rude, hands-off, and told us nothing of the history of the castle. Plus the food was HORRIBLE

Beautiful old castle - however, I'd suggest being certain there are NO weddings scheduled to take place during your stay (unless you're a guest of or in the wedding party)...

We arranged a one-night visit on Saturday, May 28. Check-in was supposed to be at 4:00 -- we arrived a little early, just after 3:00 at the gate, buzzed and asked to be allowed to check-in a little early -- a little hesitation on their part, as apparently the wedding party would be there until 6:30 or 7:00 and there was little or no parking left. At $330 for a single night, I guess I would have appreciated knowing that ahead of time -- they did allow us to come on in and found a spot for us to park...When we first were shown to our room, the staff person was warm and friendly, and told us to feel free to wander the grounds in spite of the wedding party going on -- Yeah, right. No thanks.

We had to walk in through the main lobby where all guests and the wedding reception action was just getting started. Let's just say our casual jeans and rain jackets didn't quite fit with the tangerine bridesmaids gowns and the tuxs in the room -- we made our way through the crowd as quickly as possible, scooted upstairs to our suite and locked ourselves in....

Promptly had to throw open all the windows as we found the room quite h-o-t. We immediately became privvy to every conversation of every relative attending the wedding who had posted themselves directly under our windows. Including the crying infant who apparently could not be comforted by anyone -- and wailed for over an hour... pretty much directly under our window...

About 5:00 pm we decided to scoot back out for an early dinner and grab a bottle of wine to share when we got back. Trying to be 'invisible, we tip-toed back down the staircase, back through the reception, where we overheard a loud commentary directed to us of "Who ARE these people and why do they keep just WALKING THROUGH HERE?" Uh, well -- we would be the folks who paid $330 for a single night here for a little peace & quiet and to unwind.

Dinner ? Stanley & Seifert's Restaurant -- not to be missed -- about 10 miles north (Exit 133 off I-5) -- absolutely excellent service and food -- not cheap -- but don't miss out on the hot crab and artichoke with hot bread... yummmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Our meals were wonderfully prepared. If ordering a dinner salad -- know that one is big enough for two people, and they will gladly split it for you.

We never really made it for a tour of the rest of the castle or the grounds. A wonderful breakfast was delivered to our room straight up at 9:00 am. I strongly recommend that if you're coffee snobs like us, you may want to bring your own coffee to brew in the pot provided in the room -- the stuff they had in the cannister in the room was literally undrinkable... very acidic and just yucky. (Hey -- we're lifers in the Pacific Northwest -- Starbucks is the only coffee we drink...)

Cleanliness of our room would have to be about a grade B -- the coffee table had a rather thick layer of dust along the bottom rung... probably just missed it, but made me wonder what else got skipped over...

The size of the Anna's Suite was lovely -- weirdly setup and rather eclectically decorated (a giant stuffed sheepdog is on the floor of the jacuzzi room) -- the jacuzzi tub is in the same area as the small kitchennette -- the bathroom is at the other end of the suite near the bed. Hot water was great in the jaccuzzi, but absent at the sink in the bathroom, no matter how long we let the water run... Also -- no shower in our suite, and the hand-held shower hose that was part of the jacuzzi tub did not work at all -- made it interesting trying to not break my neck when getting my shoulder-length hair washed...

If you're willing to travel a little further, I highly recommend Leavenworth's "Run of the RIver" B&B - the suites are exquisite and not quite so expensive, and we were pampered beyond words the two nights we stayed there last year.

We stayed at the Thornwood castle a couple summers ago and the castle itself was nicely updated, clean, warm and welcoming. The gardens and the view of the lake were lovely. We found that it was a little off the beaten path however, and that the innkeepers were a bit preoccupied with the weddings that were at the castle over the weekend. We felt that we didn't get as much attention as we generally expect from a B&B, especially considering the high nightly rate.
