Silver Bay Inn & Resort

My wife and I just spent 3 nights at Silver Bay Inn. If getting away from it all, no TV or phone and some of the best scenery, hiking, canoeing, fishing, wildlife viewing and biking in the world is your idea of a great vacation then this place is for you.
To get there you take a 55 mile boat ride from Chelan. Silver Bay will pick you up at the boat landing and transport you the 1.5 mile to the resort.
The cabins are rustic but very clean. Each comes compete with a full kitchen, living room, bath and bedroom and a great view of the lake. The property includes free use of bikes and canoes. The Inn has a small outdoor hot tube and a nice wood burning fire pit that anyone can use.
There are a only a couple of eating options in Stehekin so I would highly recommend you stop at the Safeway in Chelan and bring a couple of boxes of food with you on the boat.
The valley has about 13 miles of road (it runs next to the Stehekin River) and the Park Service operates a shuttle bus up and down the valley about every 4 hours. They’ll let you off at any location along the road and all you do is flag them down and they’ll stop and pick you up at any location. There are lots of trails to explore, wildlife to view (we saw bear, deer and ealges) etc.
The Stehekin Pastry Company about a 10 minutes bike ride away has the best coffee and pastries we’ve ever had.
This is a once in a life time experience, a must do for anyone looking to get away from it all………..even if it’s only for a couple of days.

We were looking for a last-minute getaway mid-week, in the off-season, and were having a hard time finding any place that was open this time of year, that accepted dogs. Finally we stumbled upon Silver Bay, and were thrilled that we did. The caretakers (nephew of the owner and his wife) were so welcoming and hospitable, and they truly went out of their way for us.

For example, one morning Dan brought fresh garlic and chive goat's cheese from the farm up the street, and another day, helped us with transportation to the end of the road so we could go for a hike. Since there were no other guests, they also let us play frisbee with our disc-loving dog on their beautiful lawn overlooking the water.

We were in real need of a break, and this was the perfect place. It's peaceful like only a town that is unreachable by roads can be, stunningly beautiful, and cozy (yet there's wifi if you need to be connected). Silver Bay really is in the most spectacular position of any place in Stehekiin - on a little peninsula at the northernmost tip of Lake Chelan. We are thinking that this will become an annual tradition!

I had a three day professional meeting in Seattle in July. I wanted a place that I could have a beautiful drive (I rented a car), and a quiet couple of days in a semi-remote location, with water AND hiking nearby. I found Lake Chelan (Sheh-laan' , not kee-lan' !) on-line, and identified the few options available for lodging in the immediate vicinity of Stehekin. A major selling point for me was that you CAN'T drive to get there, you can only take a ferry or a float plane. Other than a couple of private, longer term rentals, or the two larger lodge/resorts in Stehekin (not many people, but too close together for me), the only place I found with availability was a very small resort with nicely equipped cabins and a large house. The young managers are related to the owners, and do a great job of providing hospitallity. You can tell from their enthusiasm that they, too, are in love with this little part of the world. The cabin had a loft for one of the bedrooms, a wood-burning stove, a great view of the bay, the lake, and the river. There is a very civilized and beautiful waterfront area, with gardens, lounge chairs, as well as a hot tub, that look out onto the lake.

The very first day I was there, I went out and sat in the hot tub about 6:30 a.m., and for some reason looked up at the top of the 40' pine tree that was about 15 yards from where I was, and there was a large bald eagle perched at the pinnacle of the tree!

They provide bikes to get around the area...1-1/2 miles to Stehekin (restaurant, larger lodges, store, ferry and sea-plane docks), less than half of a mile to the Bakery (don't miss this place!), and an organic garden with fresh picked veggies, etc., with in shouting distance. There is also a National Park Srvice bus that will take you 10+ miles north to a trail that has almost immediate access to the Pacific Crest Trail, which was perfect for a full day-hike in the Cascades.

You won't find TV's, cell signals, or Wi-Fi here...necessities--yes, luxuries--no, and the people who are there seem to be there for just that reason.

Room Tip: This is not a hotel. Call them for description of their choices, so you know what you are getting...

It might help to know that check-out is around 10:00 since they need to get the rooms and cabins cleaned up before the first boat comes in at 12:30, but you can still use the bikes or canoes, weather permitting, so you could pack up, leave your bags on the steps and head out biking or hiking. You may be able to have Dan take your bags to the landing and meet him there with the bikes. Check with him first!

As soon as we landed in Stehekin we were greeted by Dan, the manager. He then took us to Silver Bay and showed us around and we were not bothered at all for the rest of our 5 day trip. We were blown away with the scenery and Silver Bay is the best location in Stehekin. If you're thinking about it, this is the best place to stay because you're not only on the lake and right on the river but you're between the town center (Stehekin Landing) and the bakery. We were blown away with the food that both had to offer. There are free bikes for you to use to get around and during peak summer months there is a daily tram that goes up and down the main road. We went in June and we were told that the next few months were very busy. We enjoyed the quiet while we were there. We definitely want to go back sometime, it's an experience that we will never forget. Be sure to stock up on groceries in Chelan.

Accommodations are incredible, the view is stupendous from your alpine style cabin. You feel like your in the Swiss Alps. This was our 9th year in a row and plan to go for many more. The owners provide kayaks, canoes, and bicycles for your enjoyment. There is also a hot tub and a fire pit at the water's edge.

We discovered this place several years ago and vowed to come back again. It is so beautiful here and just a unique place to visit. We took the “Lady of the Lake” express boat to Stehekin, as there is no outside road connecting to it. People either arrive by boat, float plane or hike in. This time we rented one of the cabins (Lake Cabin) because the main house was full. It was great to have our own spacious cabin to ourselves. The cabin was comfy and has a well equipped kitchen. However, we didn’t cook any meals while we were there. Relaxing on the deck and watching the spectacular bald eagles soaring by and taking in the beautiful scenery makes this place special. It transports you back in time when there were gravel roads and few cars. Stehekan is a small community of about 80-100 yearlong residents.

One of the amenities that we enjoy at Silver Bay Inn is the free use of the bikes (one speed), canoes, and rowboats. It’s been a long time since I got on one of these types of bike but we were able to enjoy bike rides on the relatively flat roads with no problems.

We fell in a groove every day with a bike ride to the bakery (5 minutes away) for breakfast, then going on hikes, canoeing, and to the Landing Restaurant (15 minutes along the lake) to have dinner. The restaurant has under gone a major renovation since the last time we were here. The restaurant is more attractive and the food is much better. One day we rode our bikes to the Stehekin Valley Ranch for lunch (about 1 ½ hours to get there and 1 hour to return).

On our last night there, we watched the Perseid Meteor showers from the cabin deck. We had timed our visit so we could see it. It was amazing sight to see.

We highly recommend this place if you want to escape to a tranquil paradise.
