We had breakfast this morning. The food was wonderful and plentiful. We enjoyed the breakfast poutine, chrizo and egg tacos, the huckleberry pancakes and 1 pastrami wich. The service was fast and good.

The food has never been spectacular but always good enough and fast, so I have continued to patronize this establishment. I would say the same about the waitstaff until today. Either the person who was assigned to my table today was having a bad day or is really undertrained. She put my food in front of me and never came back to see if I needed anything or to fill my water glass and then slapped my bill on the table as she practically ran by. I called to her but the place is pretty noisy so she kept on going. I waited for her to come by to collect, but finally got up and went to the front where her co-worker took payment. Nobody asked me how my meal was and even though my server wandered right up to the cash register as I was paying she never acknowledged me. Her co-worker was helpful and thanked me. I left her a 20% tip, but I won’t be back.

We've visited Spokane many times, and yet, we've never been to the Yards Bruncheon. Mostly, we kept to the usual burger tavern fare Spokane is known for, since we go because of our teenaged athlete son. He plays in a fair amount of tournaments on this side of Washington. We go to Hoopfest every June as spectators and sometimes, his cheerleaders when his team plays.

This time, we were in the mood for a brunch outside the Frank's Diner comfort zone. Something a little more hipster, artisan, fresh — more up my alley than my husband's and son's.

I found the Yards on a Google search. So glad I did.

The wait is horrible, about 30 minutes, maybe 40-50, especially if you arrive before 1:30 p.m. Our first time there last week Monday, we noticed a lot of empty tables just sitting there while a crowd gathered in the small waiting area and outside. We returned the following Sunday, a little past 1 p.m. this time, to end our family vacation, and the wait was a little better.

The wait is for the spectacular, creative, locally sourced food that is both trendy and comforting, with a twist.

I highly recommend the green smoothie, featuring kale, pear, apple, banana, and lime. Healthy and sweet, I can NEVER get my smoothies at home to taste this refreshing. Also, can we talk about the coffee? The Yards gets theirs from Spokane's Roasthouse. It's the best coffee I've ever had; reminds me of my dad's 1950s percolator.

That's just the drinks!

They also make the best avocado toast ever, perfectly seasoned with just the right amount of salt on hunky, multigrain bread. Their avocado toast is a meal in itself. I'd be completely satisfied with my green smoothie, coffee, and avocado toast every weekend, while working on my next blog.

This place is a writer's paradise.

If that's not enough, the menu offers other tempting dishes for the rest of the family who are into more comfort food. My son tried his first poutine here and insisted on returning for it again. What I enjoyed about this poutine is they don't pile on gloopy melted cheese, or weigh it down further with excessively greasy meat like other places I've seen in Vancouver and Seattle. The Yards thin grates the cheese so it looks and tastes fresh, fulfilling, rich and somehow light at the same time. That gravy should be bottled.

I love that they offer seasonal donuts. Not the huge glazed ones with holes but cute little round balls of goodness. When we dined at the end of June, they had raspberry donuts, which were slightly sourdoughy, served with what tasted like an apple butter dipping sauce. The dough could be a little less dense.

Their chilaquiles were also superior. Whatever that green salsa sauce is, bottle it too.

On our second trip back (in a week), my husband tried the Yards' version of Spam fried rice — AM Fried Rice, with kim chee, pastrami, soy sauce, and eggs. It looked dark and forbidding. But tasted like brilliance.

We enjoyed the same server both times we went. At first, she seemed busy and harried. But once we started talking to her, her walls came down, and she was one of our favorite servers ever, very engaging, real, and maternal. *Congratulations on her surprise fourth blessing on the way!

We're definitely adding the Yards Bruncheon to our MUST-SEE list. It's our new family tradition.

I'm usually here by 7:30 am so I don't have to wait for a table. Great traditional breakfast choices plus a few with a twist. Lunch items too.

First time to this restaurant. Had heard it was good. Went on a Sunday about 11:30am. Approximately 30 min wait which would have been fine except there were empty tables that just weren't being cleaned. Maybe short staffed? Eventually seated inside, mistake! Horrible acoustics! The place was so LOUD! We could barely carry on a conversation between the four of us. That does not produce a relaxing enjoyable brunch experience. Now my husband and I are in our 50s so I might have thought maybe it was us, but the other couple was in their 20s and just as turned off by the atmosphere as we were. We couldn't wait to leave. Had we known what a disappointment the food was going to be, we would have. I ordered the maple bacon waffle and a side of bacon. Both very over cooked! I had asked for bacon crisp, not one level under charcoal. A brunch place should know how to do bacon! Waffle was tough and really had no flavor. Husband ordered toad in a whole sandwich. He said it would it would have probably been good had the egg been cooked. Runny yolk is one thing runny whites is another. He did say coleslaw was good. The $7 Huckleberry Mimosa was half a glass off champagne? with what tasted like syrup added to me. The other couple had nothing flattering to say about their food experiences either. Also our server was nothing special. Didn't check back. Didn't ask if we would like the check split. All in all very a very disappointing experience. Really wanted to like this place, but it just doesnt make the cut for us. Old European Breakfast is the best brunch place in Spokane, that's where we will be!
