We parked at the middle parking area on the road that leads to the top of Mount Spokane. Headed up the Mount Kit Carson Loop Trail. I love this trail. The day was beautiful sunny, and cooler air, great for a late summer hike. We topped out at Mount Kit Carson and took the trail to the viewpoint of Day Mountain. Returning back to the trail head we took the 2nd half of the loop through the huckleberry fields in the saddle. Saw several deer in the woods, a wood pecker, and lots of finch and sparrows. A wonderful way to get a great view of the land around this great City of Spokane. Try it, you won't be disappointed.

We went up to Mt. Spokane late Sep or early Oct 2011. The drive is beautiful, and their are trails to follow. We found a place to have a picnic., the area was clean. The only thing I would suggest is buying the Discovery Pass for Washington that way you do not have to pay $10.00 each time you visit the state park. the Discovery Pass is $30.00 and covers all the state parks and it is good for a year.

I will agree with other reviews, the drive to the summit can be scary. The road is narrow with no guard rails and it simply drops off, so take it slow and be careful, but once at the top the view is outstanding and worth the "interesting" drive to the top. If it's a clear day it's amazing how far you can see. If visiting Spokane I'd suggest making the trip.

Mt Spokane, in the state of Washington, can be seen looming in the far distance from the city of Spokane. It is a state park and route 206 takes you to the top. The final few miles is a little hair raising and we were glad to meet no cars coming down. The Vista house is a stark stone building that offers a few picnic tables inside and protection from what could be very cold winds. The view from there is mostly restricted to the southeast. Walk from the parking lot toward all the tall communication towers and find a second summit from which you can see Spokane in the far distance. In the winter some people (who must be crazy) strap boards to their feet and plunge off the edge. I am pleased to confine my attention to the clever little pipes through which your gaze is directed at certain landmarks. The 5,867 foot peak allows a view of Canada on a very clear day but I did not see how to look over the edge in the northerly direction. There is a Park Office part way up where you pay a $10 entrance fee and can get a detailed verbal accounting of what to look for at the top along with a map. The nice ranger was so proud of the attraction she almost seemed to own it! The temperature drop from valley floor to the top can be 20 degrees or more and a brisk wind might blow your hat off so be careful.

I went to Mount Spokane in August, and there were fantastic views from the top. Go to the Vista Lodge and pack a lunch, you'll have great tables and great views. Be warned however the road up to the top is a curvy mountain road, which you can drive on carefully. Be sure to stop on the way up and pick huckleberries.
