I've been to Fred's a few times and there is no question that this is a great place. The beer selection is ever changing and with 40 or so on tap, you won't go away thirsty. The beers are also very well priced. Their claim to fame has to be the intimidatingly wonderful selection of Single Malt Scotch. The Scotch menu looks like a phone book and has great descriptions about each selection including geographic origin and tasting notes.
The food is typical pub fare with burger, sandwich, panini, and pizza selections. We have a gluten-free diet and Fred's will make just about any sandwich, burger or pizza with gluten free bread (or pizza dough). Most places charge extra for gluten free, but Fred's actually charges you 2 dollars LESS for the GF pizza dough. The lobster bisque is a big menu item, so we ordered a bowl. It was actually too creamy and had absolutely no lobster meat in the broth. Won't be getting that again.
Admittedly, our last visit here was a bit of a disaster, even though the food and beer was of usual high quality. The problem was that the staff was clearly overwhelmed with customers as a local festival was underway. The bartenders function as the floor waitstaff and sometimes can't get away from the bar. We had to walk up to the bar to get the attention of our "waitress" who would disappear for 15-20 minutes at a time between drink and food orders. We had to get our own napkins (not kidding) and the food came out cold since she let it sit in the back forever. The management made it right, but it was a really rough experience.
We will certainly return to Fred's but maybe when its a bit less busy.
