“Come for the Food, but not when its Busy”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 20, 2014

I've been to Fred's a few times and there is no question that this is a great place. The beer selection is ever changing and with 40 or so on tap, you won't go away thirsty. The beers are also very well priced. Their claim to fame has to be the intimidatingly wonderful selection of Single Malt Scotch. The Scotch menu looks like a phone book and has great descriptions about each selection including geographic origin and tasting notes.

The food is typical pub fare with burger, sandwich, panini, and pizza selections. We have a gluten-free diet and Fred's will make just about any sandwich, burger or pizza with gluten free bread (or pizza dough). Most places charge extra for gluten free, but Fred's actually charges you 2 dollars LESS for the GF pizza dough. The lobster bisque is a big menu item, so we ordered a bowl. It was actually too creamy and had absolutely no lobster meat in the broth. Won't be getting that again.

Admittedly, our last visit here was a bit of a disaster, even though the food and beer was of usual high quality. The problem was that the staff was clearly overwhelmed with customers as a local festival was underway. The bartenders function as the floor waitstaff and sometimes can't get away from the bar. We had to walk up to the bar to get the attention of our "waitress" who would disappear for 15-20 minutes at a time between drink and food orders. We had to get our own napkins (not kidding) and the food came out cold since she let it sit in the back forever. The management made it right, but it was a really rough experience.

We will certainly return to Fred's but maybe when its a bit less busy.

“Good selection of local beer on tap”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2014 via mobile

We went here after finding our first choice was closed on Mondays. The beer is Fred's claim to fame and they were great. The burgers were excellent but the fries were frozen and the service was a bit slow. Pronto go here if you are in a hurry!

“Poor at best”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 23, 2014 via mobile

Service: We had five different people continually asking us if we wanted more beer. Annoying! One server was wearing super short shorts and a shirt showing her midriff. Tacky and unappetizing.

Food: I ordered the white bean and chicken soup, which was actually chili, luckily I like spicy food. The flavor was good, but the beans were not all the way cooked. My husbands Reuben was mediocre.

Atmosphere: very loud. Dark with glaring windows, so if you are seated looking toward window you can't see the person sitting across from you. The old bar is the coolest part, everything else seemed unimpressive.

Don't need to go back.

“Excellent Service & Food!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 14, 2014

Just stopped into Fred's this afternoon and was very happy with the service, no end to wait staff coming by to see if we needed anything, as well as the food.
We had the "Southwestern Chicken Salad" and it was GREAT! Hot chicken on a bed of lettuce, olives, etc. with one of the best spicy dressings I've had. Our mid-afternoon respite from a business day was pleasant, homey, and filling.
I'd recommend "Fred's Rivertown Alehouse" to anyone, families or couples. It is an Alehouse so be aware that it can be a bit Loud, but the service and menu are both top-notch for a family, alehouse, restaurant.

“Overprice & overcooked Halibut Fish & Chips”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 23, 2014

Friends suggested we go to this restaurant as they felt the Halibut fish & chips served to them on a previous visit was as good as those served at the Sandbar Tavern in Juneau, Alaska. IMHO there was no comparison. Based on my meal, most drive-ins offer fish and chips just as good if not better and then at half the $18.95 price charged at Fred's. Mine were overcooked and very dry. Most fish and chips I've enjoyed over the years are moist but not these. Maybe there was a different cook on duty when we were there. Who knows? But I doubt we would return for Fred's fish & chips as there are many other restaurants we've been to in our area that serve better Halibut fish & chips for less. I wouldn't recommend this place for fish & chips.
