“Delightful Dishes, Superb Service”
Reviewed November 12, 2007

The Alder Wood Bistro is the find of the century in Sequim. Off the main drag, this quaint restaurant serves fantastic meals from start to finish. Each course was more delectable than the last (these dishes complimented each other well - mussels appetizer, fall salad with crab, wild salmon and flourless chocolate cake). Perfect for a romantic dinner or small party of friends. Be sure to make a reservation for a weekend visit.

“Great food comes to Sequim, at long last”
Reviewed October 26, 2007

We have been looking for a place like the Alder Wood Bistro for years. The Sequim area has not been known for its dining options, even though the surrounding farm country produces pork, lamb, and all kinds of wonderful vegetables. Then, a young couple opened a new restaurant, and things changed. They obviously love good food, know what they are doing in the kitchen, and know how to run a hospitable dining establishment.

They search the local farms for lamb and pork. They have lavender sausages made from Berkshire pork and Sequim's famous lavender. They make a magnificent moussaka; the lamb was distinctive and the cinnamon and eggplant in perfect balance. The steak frites was the hearty dish it is supposed to be, with French fries straight from the deep fryer.

The Northwest still has a viable fishery, and a lot of fish are landed locally, so the fish at Alder Wood are fresh off the boat and delightfully prepared. The rich oiliness of the white king salmon was set off by a nectarine and blueberry salsa, both local fruits. The black cod was paired with red and gold Dungeness beets. The Sequim area produces excellent beets and carrots, sweet and full of flavor. The side vegetables were all local - fingerling potatoes, caulflower, and broccoli, as were the mixed greens in the salads.

We should also mention that Alder Wood has a wood fired oven. They start every meal with some of their focaccia and a hummus dip. They also serve pizzas with thin crusts, crisp and chewy, and the toppings are based on local ingredients such as chanterelle, arugula, basil pesto, and cherry tomatoes. You can just come for the pizza, but you'll be missing the main show at the Bistro.

We could go on and on about the food. You can taste the love and care, and the skill and sense of place. The dining room is a cheerful, cozy space, and there is a pretty garden out back for outdoor dining in the warmer months. The service is warm and professional. Coming in feels like homecoming. It's high time that the North Olympic Peninsula had a restaurant this good.

“Worth the wait...”
Reviewed July 31, 2007

We had dinner at the Alder Wood Bistro on a Saturday night that happened to be during the Lavender Festival. This is a small restaurant and although they have outdoor seating, it happened to be a damp night and we waited almost an hour to eat, which is what we were told when we arrived at the restaurant. We were seated at a cozy table and once we ordered our food, were served promptly. Our server, Lance, was friendly and helpful as we tried to decide what to order, and he also gave us a brief history of the restaurant. We ended up having sweet potato fries with aioli for an appetizer, which were served piping hot, crisp, and in large quantity. We split the pear and blue salad which was perfect; I ordered lamb and my husband had chicken breast. This restaurant uses organic produce and meats from local sources, which was evident in the quality of the finished dishes. My husband enjoyed his chicken but my lamb was some of the best, most tender and perfectly-cooked lamb I have ever tasted. We were so full and satisfied after our main course that we were going to pass on dessert, but Lance promoted the apple pie so much that we "forced" ourselves to share a piece, serve warm with vanilla bean ice cream. It was wonderful, and topped off a very enjoyable meal in an intimate setting with competent, personable employees. The only disappointment: they are closed Sunday and Monday so we could not return the next day!

“An amazing find”
Reviewed March 2, 2007

My wife and I found this bistro while in Sequim, WA for our 15th anniversary in Nov 2006. We were in town 3 nights and we couldn't stop coming back to this restaurant. We had 2 or 3 lunches and 2 dinners here and wished we could have stayed longer. We tried salads, pizza, salmon, panini, and a couple of the chicken or meat specials I think (can't quite remember now). The desserts were great, too. This appears to be one of the favorite restaurants for the locals -- and it's kind of hidden away close to the city center, so it doesn't appear to get the drive-by tourists. The atmosphere is relaxed and feels very much like it's name -- a neighborhood bistro. It's run by a couple, who were obviously doing it because this is what they want to do with their lives. So the service was exemplary and very personable and really added a memorable touch to our weekend. My wife and I cannot wait to come back (we live 5 hours away, in Oregon).
