“Nice Touch”

Roche Harbor Colors Ceremony
Attraction details

Try to get close to the flag poles to watch this event. Anticipate the cannon salute so you can plug your ears if need be. Depending on how many flags are present it could take a while to get them all down and folded. They try to play the anthems of each country represented and, in the case of an event that would cause them to fly old glory at half staff, they will play taps. The announcer is on the roof above the Lime Kiln Cafe and will recognize birthdays, anniversaries, and other special events being celebrated by folks who are in the harbor that day. The event is advertised as occurring at "dusk" but you should arrive at least 30 to 45 minutes before sunset or you will miss it.

Historic, quaint, patriotic and delightful. Most of my table missed the really fun moments after the flag was folded. That's when they dance! Or at least it looks like it as they go through intricate footwork.

While on vacation, we decided to drive down to Roche Harbor to watch the sunset and while we were there, we heard music playing in the background so we checked it out and low and behold, the color guard was performing a flag ceremony where they retire several flags, the Canadian Flag, American flag and three others and while they are bringing down the flags, they play that particular countries anthem. After they bring down the American flag, a cannon is shot, which sacred the holy begeeses out of us. A bunch of huge yachts and boats gather around the marina to watch the ceremony and when all is said and done all the boats honk their horn and make a huge commotion. It was a cool ceremony and definitely a great find. Also, ya gotta try the donuts at the little restaurant right next to where the ceremony is held and once your done with that play a game of bocce ball - really, really fun evening!!
