“Birthday get away”
Reviewed July 18, 2013

For us too ... first off the setting is spectacular. We stayed in a cliff house and the views were fabulous. The rooms were clean and private. And the restaurant, although pricey, was delicious. We did the 5-course wine pairing -- was a great way to taste the food with the wine and not feel over full. The wait staff at the restaurant were friendly, courteous and attentive with good recommendations. The negatives ... I echo the review below ... THE FRONT DESK PEOPLE NEED TRAINING IN CUSTOMER SERVICE. We pulled into the lobby and happened to be the only people there. We waited while the person at the desk proceeded to carry on a phone conversation, never once looking up or saying "I'll be with you in a moment," for over 5 minutes. When he finally got off the phone he said "hello" and then walked into the back room, while we waited probably another 5 minutes. We had originally reserved a yurt but being Tuesday night and the Inn not looking over crowded, we asked if we could upgrade to a cliff house. Again, his response was curt and that there were only 2 cliff houses available. The one we got was nice, as they all looked to have good views, but it was obvious that there were others that might have been a little nicer -- nothing more than the 2 were offered. For the price you would expect to have a working television as well. When we called to ask about the t.v. the front desk said "yes the television have been out for about a week and someone is hopefully going to fix them." No apology or offer for a discount. Even the next day when we checked out the front desk staff was nothing but curt. I guess if you are going to spend that kindof money on a place it would be nice to be treated as if you mattered. Would I recommend Cave B to my friends, absolutely! For the beautiful scenery, restaurant and wine (it is delish!) but I would warn them to not expect much from the office staff.

Room Tip: The spa is closed Tuesday and Wednesday -- would be nice if they offered locals a discount like they...

First off, this property is beautiful and the views of the gorge are spectacular. We arrived at 4:15 pm and our reservation was not in their card system but they found us on the computer. The check-in personnel were aloof, and unfriendly. Room was very clean, comfortable and a delight to stay in. We did call the desk x 2 as we had questions and neither time did they answer the phone. We were in a pet friendly room but none of the supplies stated on their website were in the room for our dog. We never signed a pet disclosure which supposely was a requirement. Dinner at the restaurant was wonderful but very expensive. $ 45 for a Halibet entree. We visited the winery for a quick tasting before dinner and the person initially pouring our wine didn't talk about the wine we were being poured, she was more attentive to a group of men who came in after us. The female business manager of the winery took over for her and what a difference she made in our experience. She was knowledgeable and interesting to talk to. Everything else was perfect-the grounds were well maintained and the pool was spotless. One last thing is that the yard maintenance man was weed eating our patio area before we checked out which was disturbing to the quiet tranquility of the morning.

Room Tip: The CliffSide is the best choice of rooms

Did I mention what a great view there is? We stayed in a yurt and really enjoyed it. Others in our group stayed in the cliff houses and also were happy with their choice. Although the yurt doesn't have tv, there is wifi and an iPod dock. It was clean, spacious, and from our yurt there was a view across the vines to the Columbia Gorge. What an amazing setting for a wedding! The downside: there is only one (very pricy) restaurant. As it's somewhat isolated, this can be a bother. We were able to bring supplies back from the supermarket in Quincy (there was a small fridge), but would have liked another option at the location.

My husband and I stayed in a Yurt at Cave B Inn for our 25th Wedding Anniversary. The staff was very accommodating and friendly. The grounds had a few walking trails through the vineyard and lovely lookout spots over the Gorge and Columbia River. Our Yurt had no TV so it was just the two of us spending time together. The Yurt is considered luxury camping since it had fewer amenities than most hotel rooms (really only a TV and alarm clock), but it does have a King size bed, a/c, refrigerator, coffee maker, tea kettle and a private bath. We really enjoyed our time at Cave B Inn and are already planning on returning there to stay in either a Yurt again or to try one of the Cliff Houses.

Room Tip: We stayed in Yurt 18 which cost a little more, but the view was excellent and it sits off with only...

Thank you for taking the time to write a review about your experience in one of our Yurts. We are so pleased that your anniversary stay was what you had hoped it would be. We purposely did not provide a TV in the Yurts as we wanted that experience to be one in which one could truly escape from the din and clamor of everyday life. So pleased also that you took advantage of the hiking trails. Next time I hope you will take the vineyard tour which will give you a great deal of information about the area and why it is unique and special.

We have visited Cave B several times in the past but it has always been just for lunch or dinner. We have always enjoyed our meals and thought the place seemed so nice that it would be great to stay there sometime but we never had the opportunity to do so until recently. We had a bit of a mix up with our online reservations. We thought we had booked a cliffhouse room but when we checked in we were given a cavern room instead. We decided we would check out the cavern room to see if it was going to be alright as it was about $50.00 less. We went to the room and although it was ok it just was not what we had in mind and had hoped for. We went back to the front desk and asked if we could check into a Cliffhouse room instead. The gal at the front desk said it would be no problem and even suggested we stay in number 8 as it has one of the best views. When we went to our “new” room we were so happy we had made the change. The Cliffhouse room was just what we had in mind. The view from our room was spectacular! The amenities were very nice. Comfortable bed, large bathroom, nice living area with gas fireplace. Having been to Cave B before for meals we knew our dinner was going to be good and this time around we were not disappointed. Almost all of their food is local, some of the veggies are grown right on the property and the meat is all from local farms as well. Delish! We went back for breakfast in the morning and although I wouldn’t say it was super great, it was very good.
Now here is where Cave B needs improvement. I think it needs a little TLC. Not 100% sure how long it has been up and running but after several years of wear and tear the place needs a little sprucing up. Paint chips on the walls here and there. Exterior of the buildings have some minor maintenance issues that need addressing. The landscaped areas need some more attention our lawn area outside our room was in desperate need of mowing. The patio area outside our room had several weeds growing through the slate. A good landscape crew should be able to easily keep on top of that but it is not being done. There was broken stones on the path down to our room that actually could be dangerous if not taken care of immediately, but they look as if they had been broken for some time.
We really love Cave B for what it has to offer but hopefully the management there addresses the need for it to get a little TLC it needs and deserves.

Room Tip: The Cliffhouse rooms are the best, but they are also more $$$

Thank you for your thorough review. We appreciate your taking the time and effort to write about your experience at Cave B, and the many meals you have had with us. For your information, we very recently shifted the responsibility of taking care of the outside of the buidlings and general landscaping to an outside firm, which has brought more manpower into the equation for landscaping projects and maintenance. Their initial focus has been on several large projects, preparing and seeding three large new lawn areas, emptying, cleaning, and repairing a 1,000,000 gallon pond. Attention has now returned to the spaces in and around the lodging units. As you undoubtedly noticed, Cave B Inn's 55 rooms are spread out over more than 40 acres of land, and include working vineyards, and a large Chef's garden. We are now in what is called the period of grand growth in the vineyards, and with the recent and unusual rains, everything is growing, including the weeds, at a very rapid pace. Here at Cave B we are constantly working to keep a balance between maintaining things in as natural a state as possible, including encouraging the natural fauna and flora to flourish, (but not the weeds!) and maintaining landscaped spaces in a resort ready state.

We went here for my birthday weekend. First what we loved about it... The location is unbeatable. The wines are VERY good. The staff are... friendly. But... The rooms in the Inn are poorly appointed, nicks and dings in the cheap furniture, the curtains were ripped and falling off the rod, the next door room's shower sounded as if it were IN our room, the toilet seat was sticky, they vacuumed some area outside our room at 6:30am on Sunday, and that's just the room. The bocci ball and horseshoe courts were unusable, overgrown and patchy, the pool area was in need of maintenance including the pond with algae growing, weeds in the pavement... The staff is not up to the training you would expect at a resort. This is not a well-maintained place. I hope the management reads this and makes some changes because it could be amazing.
The restaurant is quite good, some delicious food, but the staff is mixed. There were just two of us, and they brought the wrong entree, twice. The staff is not well trained. While I understand that it may be hard to find people of the expected caliber in this area, many other remote resorts bring in staff, or you set up a serious training program yourself.
The location is gorgeous (no pun intended) but we left feeling ripped off.

Thank you for your review. It would be very helpful if you could call the Inn and leave a number by which you can be reached as I would very much like to talk with you further about your experience at Cave B. The review indicates that you stayed in January of 2013, but this cannot be correct as the observations that you made would indicate a stay in the spring. I am guessing, but do not know for sure, that the room you stayed in, is one that has been put "out of order" until renovated.

We found our queen room located within Cave B Inn to be very comfortable. We had a spacious suite with microwave, fridge, coffee maker, and electric kettle. The staff was friendly but not in an obnoxious way.

An issue we had with our room was that we could not open the curtains and maintain any kind of privacy. We had a walkway on one end and a view of the cars on the other end. The second issue we noticed is that our room and the dining room had nice views of the port-o-potties located on the Gorge Amphitheater property. For the prices, it seems like the owners could plant some bushes to cover the views. Looking the other direction, however, the view was stunning.

There is not a lot to do at Cave B. So once you have tasted the wine and done some time at the spa, you might want to plan some day trips.

Room Tip: The amenities in the inn rooms, yurts, cliff houses, and cavern rooms vary greatly. The yurts are...
