“Quiet, relaxing and luxurious!”
Reviewed October 27, 2007

My fiance and I stayed at the Cave B Inn for a long weekend - what a treat! The property is SPECTACULAR! We rented a Cliffehouse, and it was magnificent - you will NOT be disappointed. What a relaxing and QUIET environment!

We took a hike down to the Columbia, really nice hike and absolutely beautiful views. If you leave the resort and make a right out of the main road... follow that for a few miles until you come to Vantage Rd (I think). Make a RIGHT onto Vantage Rd. This takes you to a popular rock climbing area called "The Feathers". Another mile or so down and you can park in a Fish and Wildlife access area and hike to the Sunshine Wall, which is ABSOLUTELY spectacular - the hike is not easy, and one section involves squeezing through a narrow passage between rocks, so if you are a "faint of heart" hiker - I'd stick to walking around the vineyards at the hotel.

We didn't eat at the hotel - neither of us are too interested in gourmet food, so we ended up going to "The Tav" in Ellensburg, which has some great burgers.

Overall, I HIGHLY recommend Cave B Inn. It is a little out of the way, but worth it if you want some well-deserved peace and quiet.

This is an incredibly wonderful property that I would highly recommend to those looking for a unique and special experience.
The only criticism I can give is the service is inconsistant and is what you'd expect from a no name resort in the middle of nowhere - this is not Four Seasons or Ritz-Carlton service, although the propert is certainly worthy of this stature.
I'd recommend arriving early and staying late just to relax and enjoy the private, casita like rooms with top of the line amenities.\

I found the prices in the restaurant reasonable and the service excellent, although the drink prices and wine are certainly not worth it.

Myself and two of my girlfriends stayed at the Cave B as a way to celebrate my birthday and have a girls get away. It was amazing! The room was beautiful and the views spectacular! We loved Tendrills and had a great dinner and lunch there during our stay. The service was wonderful with everyone willing to go out of their way to make our stay lovely. I would highly recommend the Cave B Inn. I can't wait to take my husband!

We were very pleased with our stay at the Cave B Inn. We stayed in a 2 bedroom cliffhouse, the only one that was slightly isolated from the rest of the cliffhouses. Two bedroom is a bit misleading, because one "bedroom" is separated from the living area only by a large fireplace, so there's not lots of privacy for that area. However, it was not troublesome to us, because we didn't use the separate bedroom. Rooms were quite comfortable, with nice large bath, separate tub and shower. Living area, with leather couch, was great. Flatscreen TV, which could be turned to living area or bedroom, was nice. Cliffhouse had a nice porch, with a delightful view. Great for watching sun go down over Columbia River. We ate at restaurant every morning and every evening and found the food to be very good. Unlike other reviewers, we found service to be really good! This is a somewhat isolated location, but that's exactly what we wanted!

We love this place and have visited on several occasions. The location is stunning, the Cliffhouses comfortable and romantic, and the whole experience is very relaxing - especially walking through the vineyards.

However, the service needs a major overhaul. While the staff are pleasant, it doesn't seem like they've been trained. At several different times, we stood waiting for ages - in the restaurant, at the bar, at reception - while staff walked by us and said nothing - not a "Can i help you?" or a "Be right with you". They were far from busy and there were plenty of staff around.

They did however, manage to post some woman with a clipboard at the pool, who confronted various people from our group to make sure they were "registered guests", which was very tacky given that 1) The pool is still under construction and with builders, dust and equipment still around, 2) This place is in the middle of nowhere and 3) The complete absence of proactive customer service elsewhere.

At $400+ a night, they should do better than this, and train their staff to a level more in keeping with a boutique resort/hotel.

First, you are in the middle of nowhere and getting farther from somewhere with every mile you drive. How someone had the "huevos" to build a property like this in such an outpost gives credence to the phrase "more money than sense". There is no way they can make "ends meet" strictly off the summer weekend concert business at The Gorge Ampitheatre next door (the company that built an ampitheatre in this location also must have had a great deal of "vision").

With that said, it is an incredible place to spend 24 to 48 hours. The property consist of numerous single units, perched on the cliffs above the Columbia River with one multi-unit building housing "cavern" units and a main building housing check-in, the restaurant and three additional rooms. Surrounding you are the vineyards of Cave B and Sagecliffe and farther up the hill are the winery's Tasting Room. The view and entire setting is breathtaking and unlike anywhere else I have visited. A pool is under construction and will be a very nice amenity ( they should have had one prior to now).

We stayed in a Cavern Room and found it to be a nice size and appointed as nicely as any upscale hotel room (linens, toiletries and furnishings all first class). I can imagine that the single rooms offer even more space and privacy at similar luxury.

So what keeps this place from perfection? I'll make a list which is short and, in some cases, minor in nature, but taken as a whole keeps the Cave B Inn from being 5 star.

1) Air Conditioning in the room - I knew they had an issue when a sign on the thermostat says "Don't turn thermostat below 68 degrees or the unit will freeze". Trust me, 72 degrees is more than it could handle. We suffered through several hours of freeze up where the temperature rose to 78 in the room during the night before the thing defrosted and came back on.
2) Service - I am sure it is hard to get trained staff in this outpost to match the level of property improvements but our wait staff in the restaurant, at both dinner and breakfast, was lacking in training although extraordinarily well intentioned.
3) The Little Things - I'm sure they strive to be a five star destination so little things like a) no Ginger Ale in the bar, b) no wines on the list other than those grown on-site, c) no Valet when they require you to park your car a significant distance from your room, d) Room Service was spotty.

All in all, a great experience at a place I will recommend to others.

  • Liked — A setting as inviting as you will fin in such an unlikely locale.
  • Disliked — Just need to tend to a couple of little things to make this place perfect.

We went here soon after they opened when it was freezing outside, and still had a great time. It's an easy getaway since it's only an hour from Seattle. We stayed in a Cavern Room which was brand new and modern with a big view of the gorge and orange land.

The rooms are kind of built into the land and the buildings are one story, so very quiet and private. The room had a beautiful bathroom and tub with shutter windows that open to the hotel room and view. I also loved that there were a number of great magazines in the room. The rooms also had high ceilings, a fireplace, canopy bed, and flat screen TV with DVDs to borrow from the lobby.

The restaurant was wonderful. A real surprise. The wine tasting was a fun thing to have, but the overall experience of it left a bit to be desired.

All in all, it was a perfect getaway.
