“Great Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 2, 2013

Friends recommended the Commander's Beach House to us.A great recommendation and experience. Jim and Gail are new friends and wonderful hosts with excellent recommendations for local attractions, restaurants and events.
Located close to town and walking distance to shopping, food, whale watching, and events.
Quiet book reading and beach strolling filled in the time we spent.
Comfortable, quiet room and delicious breakfast.
I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a get-away.

We stayed at the Commander Beach House on Saturday August 23rd. The server was great and the room were quaint and totally aligned with the Port Townsend culture. The inn keepers totally exceeded our expectations in service and friendliness. The House sit on the Puget Sound in walking distance to the downtown area.

Five stars is the rating based on our visit :-)

What a warm, hospitable, comfortable four-night stay at this home on the water! This is the place to come to relax and renew one's spirit in an unhurried atmosphere. Jim and Gail are amiable hosts, attentive to all your needs. Breakfast is a real treat, with homemade scones or muffins, yogurt and fruit, and a different egg dish each day. One morning, we had pancakes with freshly-picked blackberries. There's plenty of coffee and tea and and lots of good books everywhere.

Just past the adjacent marina, and you're downtown, where there's plenty to do and see: the Wooden Boat Center, the beautiful boats in the marinas, fine bookstores, good places to have coffee and to eat. Among the latter, the Belmont is tops. When you get back from town, you can walk the beach, relax in an Adirondack chair on the spacious lawn as you read, sip a glass of wine, and check out the passing ferries, tugs and sailboats.

We thoroughly enjoyed this B&B, and hope to return soon and often.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Island View room on the 2nd floor- larger, with good views, and the Schooner room o...

The place is on the beach as advertised and is spotlessly clean but overly knickknacked for most modern tastes and taking off one's own jewellery overnight is somewhat anxiety provoking as one's own possessions tend to sink into the sea of clutter which inhabit the rooms never to be seen again unless one has packed a personal metal detector...
Those lucky enough to have booked the rooms with a view of the beach no doubt have a much better chance of a good experience at this B & B as the view is lovely but book 'The Sunflower Room' at your peril as the tiny room has a view of only a nondescript car park and boat yard. But far worse is the shared bathroom with THE OWNERS. This fact is not disclosed on the website and it should be as sharing a bathroom with strangers is one thing but sharing a personal space with the landlord and his wife was extremely uncomfortable and I would not have taken the room had I known this in advance. We were told on arrival that the owners would be using the bathroom between 7:15 and 7:45am each morning, OK we stayed in bed although robbed of more sleep due to the sound of ablutions in the adjoining room. However, imagine my discomfort when I returned to use the bathroom at about 10am to come face to face with the landlady in the bathroom as she had failed to the lock the door to our room before she did whatever she needed to do. Similarly on the last morning, I returned to use the shared bathroom again and found myself confronted with the door to the owners bedroom left wide open. Luckily, I recalled that they had announced they were leaving that morning so after calling out to make sure no one was there hastily closed and locked the adjoining door. Their sloppiness about privacy in this bathroom and the fact that there were personal possessions and towels left in this shared bathroom was very unprofessional.
Finally, the gourmet breakfast. Well, it might be 'gourmet' to some people but not for most people who have ever cooked anything for themselves or eaten anywhere but the most ordinary of cafes. The portions were so controlled they felt stingy, half a slice of ham on each plate
and no toast or fruit juice! Apparently, we were informed, the owners don't eat much bread so they don't have any for the guests either. We stayed 3 nights and on Monday morning we were served the same peach muffin [admittedly home made but how hard is it to make muffins?] as we had been given on Saturday morning. My partner asked if he could have something different and was treated to the third degree about why he did not want the muffin and was there a problem with it? The other guests that morning got the last two scones that had been conjured from the freezer, lucky them.
We felt like the friends of friends who had overstayed their welcome in a private home not like paying guests in a highly rated B & B. Had I known that I had not paid the bill in advance [I thought I had] we would have left after the first night.

Room Tip: Avoid Sunflower Room and read my review for details

I have stayed at the CBH a few times with friends and my partner within the last 10 years or so. Every time throughout the years we enjoyed the stay very much. Caring hosts, beautiful rooms, wonderful view.
If you are looking for a place to relax, enjoy great breakfast, good wine and have all the rest you need, this is the place to go.

(The site forces me to pick what sort of trip it was but only let me choose one. It was last time as a couple, beforehand a few times with friends, I just didn't have the chance to write the review as of yet. First visit must have been around 12 years ago, last visit was last year - the quality and the high standard kept the same)

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a view to the water - the other rooms are also nice but the sound and view of...

This was our third stay and it was just as relaxing as the other two. Gail and Jim provide such a warm, comfortable home away from home with fabulous breakfasts, wine, coffee and snacks whenever you want them, great conversation and local recommendations. Plus, the rooms are really inviting and cozy, and the location can't be beat. Truly a great place to stay!

My wife and I returned to the Commander's house for another enjoyable rest in a beautiful setting. The sounds of gulls and other shore birds, along with the waves hitting the beach, lull you to sleep as you sink into your lounge chair. If you're looking for a place to unwind, while enjoying the views of the Cascades & Puget Sound, this is it. Commander Jim and Admiral Gail make you feel right at home, as do all their staff. Breakfasts are freshly prepared and tasty, with just the right portions to start your day. Be mindful that this isn't a slick resort, but rather a warm and inviting B&B where you can get away from the maddening crowds. We'll be back!

Room Tip: Some rooms have a private bath, others do not. Book early if you want to assure a room facing the Pu...
