“OK but food quality needs to go a level up”

We tried Addie Mae's this past week, and were pleasantly surprised by the informal but comfortable atmosphere and very friendly service. We sat in the back, where there is a very nice greenhouse enclosed eating room - very bright. We were not that impressed with the food. The gumbo was good, but the shrimp was a bit mushy. I had the catfish, which was nicely seasoned, and also good, but not great. The collard greens were overcooked and soggy. Cornbread, a favorite of mine, was good but, again, not as good as others I have had. I would classify the food as a bit better than average, but not very good - while it has a great menu, more attention should be paid to the quality of the dishes.

We had dinner there last night and loved it. The food was excellent and the service was too. The waitress is such nice lady.

If you're vegetarian and don't often get the chance to try Southern cooking, this is the place to give it a go. We had Portabello mushroom slices with BBQ sauce (the sauce is so powerful that the taste of the mushrooms is lost) and a side of cheesy grits (first time -- and based on this experience, won't be the last) and green beans (simple, firm). Also red beans and rice which were good but rather plain. Wish we would've had room for some sweet potato pie. They have three seating areas (front, solarium, outside deck) so if it's sunny go right to the deck out back. Friendly servers.

Try the peach cobbler. I wish they had a healthy sald along with the fried foods. But it does taste like the south.
