“Atmosphere!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 17, 2013

This gorgeous hotel was the perfect place for our little family to stay during our vacation to Port Townsend. The decor and furniture were incredible (so Victorian--but with a great flat-screen TV and DVD player and a really nice bathroom! Hooray for indoor plumbing!), the suite was clean, and the kitchenette came with everything we needed to cook a few meals in the hotel: a small refrigerator/freezer (not a tiny one--this was about 5 feet tall), a toaster, dishes (including silverware), a coffee maker, microwave oven, a cutting board, dish soap, a dish rack for drying, dish towels...everything. The complimentary breakfast was simple, but delicious, and there was plenty of it.

We chose a suite with a main sitting room, one bedroom, a bathroom (the roomy, tall shower was so great after a cold day walking along the beach), and kitchenette. This gave our family of four plenty of room. The hide-a-bed (in the couch) wasn't comfortable, but our young kids didn't seem to mind a few springs.

We will definitely be staying here again! It's really conveniently located and just so atmospheric. Be sure to check out the garden in the back of the hotel! The staff were fabulous, and gave us all kinds of recommendations of places to eat and things to do. I've never had such great service from a hotel.

If you're going to stay in a Victorian town, you have to stay in a Victorian hotel. We stayed at the Bishop for one night at the end of our trip in the Olympic National Park. It is a very charming little property at the edge of downtown, and we were very pleased with our stay. The innkeeper was very friendly and knowledgeable about the area with good recommendations for places to eat. The room was cozy and very clean, and the bed was comfy. A cool feature of the room is the exposed brick walls.

We had dinner at the Silverwater Cafe, a great room, with excellent food. And for breakfast we strolled down to the Marina, about a 30 minute walk to a great little place called the Blue Moose (definitely a must.)

Room Tip: We chose room 26 on the ground floor. Rather than opening a door into a bedroom, you walk into a nic...

We spent five weekdays at the Bishop (four nights) in one of the King Suites (#18). The pictures on the Internet made it look not only homey but elegant. We were delighted to find a small refrigerator, microwave and dishes in the kitchen (also a toaster and iron). It took us a bit longer to locate the hair dryer, but there is one (keep looking).

The living room was narrower than it seemed in the photo, and the table less gracious, but once we adjusted to what was there rather than what we imagined from the picture, it was lovely. The number of incidental tables was good. Drawers were adequate. Windows open and you can control the heat yourself with the gas stove inset in the fireplace.

We found the bed very comfortable, and with an assortment of half a dozen pillows, one or two are sure to please. The bathtub was extra large and deep. The soaps and body lotion were nice. (We went walking into town to buy a bottle of lotion for a massage, but the small bottle in the room actually smelled better than what we found in the mercantile.)

For ice or cold soda or water, you have to go to the front desk. That brings me to the best part--the staff is not only accommodating but solicitous. We asked for extra flutes for our post-wedding champagne, which they eagerly supplied. One of the managers also knew the judge marrying us, gave us a bit of info, and happily served as one of our witnesses.

Breakfast is delivered in a basket outside your door at 7:00 or 9:00. You phone in your choices from a list before 10:00 pm the night before.

We were on the third floor. Our 50-pound suitcase was a bit much to get up two flights of stairs, and running to the front desk for a soda? Put on your shoes, because you have to step outside for about four feet and go into the next door. :) Coffee and cocoa are available in the lobby and on the third floor all day (2nd floor--go up the stairs). Apples are also abundantly available for snacking anytime.

Lots of jigsaw puzzles. I didn't see any games till I looked around in the lobby the day we left and discovered Scrabble.

The location is walking distance from restaurants and most anything waterfront or downtown. There is a conference room; public computer and printer on the second floor.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to share your comments and for adding another 5 star rating for our hotel.

We do pride ourselves with having many of the comforts of home to offer our guests during their stay. Since our hotel is located in a historic building dating back to 1890, it doesn’t have the convenience of an elevator. We apologize for any inconvenience but part of the old-world charm of this historic Victorian Hotel is to maintain the stairs-only access.

It appears that you did enjoy our complimentary amenities. I am especially pleased that you found our team members friendly and helpful. It’s great to see that our passion for delivering great customer service is shining through.

We are certainly well placed for many local tourist attractions and I am pleased to note that you both enjoyed your time with us.

I hope we can welcome you both back soon, perhaps on your Wedding Anniversary or any special stay. Don’t forget to visit The Bishop Victorian website for special deals and promotional offers.

Regards

The elements that keeps this property from receiving an "Excellent" rating are largely outside the operators control. While a tad worn, this enchanting three story facility is well appointed and expertly looked after. Staff is excellent, the bed in our room also excellent and while the thin walls that come with a 100+ year old building are concerning (toddler screaming himself to sleep next door didn't help), overall the reasonably priced two room suite our party stayed in was a great value.

Located a block off of busy Water Street, the Bishop is within easy waking distance of the somewhat overly touristy downtown district. Great ambiance with a nice window view, private bath and a satisfying breakfast basket, this hotel is a fine stop in Port Townsend.

We have stayed at the Bishop at least 15 times over the years. Port Townsend is the cutest little seaside town - it is quiet and simply full of pure charm. This hotel is great - they take dogs and we have brought our dog Charlie there many times . This is an old building it is a Victorian building so this means NO elevator and steep stairs but we don't mind - pack light as you will be hauling your suitcase up - it's great for your heart ! Who cares but if you had a disability or can't do stairs you would need to book the ground floor suite - there is only one. Great specials there you can sometimes get free movie tickets or dinner vouchers - we go there at least 2x per year. If travelling by the keystone ferry you need to Book in advance. Don't forget to visit Karen at Insatiables Book store across the street from the hotel.

I like the idea of the Bishop very much. Suites with gas fireplace and basic kitchen set up. I feel like $150 (before tax) was too much to pay for what we received and our time of visit, winter and off season.
I have several reasons: the poor condition of the bed, very soft mattress and very squeaky. Just turning over in bed created a disturbing noise. Also, the door of the bedroom was very loud/creaky and difficult to close (unhelpful when one person wants to sleep a bit longer).
Lastly, the included breakfast was not very special, just like everyday items I could grab at the grocery store. I understand that the Bishop is a lovely old historical building....but for $150, I need a GOOD BED!

This was our third trip to PT and we enjoy visiting the town very much. However, it is very unlikely that we would return to stay at the Bishop.

Although we monitor each suite for any deficiencies, guest reviews remain our best source of information. Consequently we appreciate all guest reviews and thank you for yours.

One guest checking out of Suite 22 on January 1st mentioned that bed as being squeaky. That situation was addressed the next day by our maintenance team and fixed. Today we double checked the work and the bed is no longer squeaky. We also tested the bathroom door and it closes properly with no squeakiness.

The price you quoted in your review is much higher than the rate for Suite 22. The makes us wonder if the problems you mentioned remain. In the event you stayed in a different suite we would appreciate hearing from you.

I recently visited Port Townsend for the first time and am so happy I chose to stay at The Bishop Victorian. The hotel was charming and the staff were so pleasant. When we arrived, the front desk showed us places of interest around the waterfront and recommended restaurants, including Hanazono Asian Noodle which was delicious. She also had listings for the local Rose theater. Breakfast is served every morning in a basket outside your door and there was a great DVD selection. The hotel was close to everything and we visited both the waterfront and the uptown part of PT.
