The moment Cindy greeted us at the door of her establishment, we stepped back in time. The Christmas tree by the front door and tasteful decor added festive atmosphere away from home.
Stranded in Port Townsend by cancelled ferries Cindy looked after us like lost puppies. Hospitality took on a new dimension.
We opted for her most basic room (since we were paying for two hotel rooms that night) and loved it. The bed was super comfortable, there were delicious truffles on the dresser and the attention to detail was impressive.
Cindy and Nathan certainly lived up to their motto to make our stay nothing short of extra ordinary.
Too bad we arrived and left in the dark, so we never enjoyed seeing it at daylight but we hope to back some day to enjoy more than one night at the Old Consulate Inn.
Cindy got up early to pack us a breakfast we just couldn't miss and thoroughly enjoyed on the ferry back to Whitbey Island.

This was my second visit with Cindy and Nathan as hosts, having been here many times in the past. What a wonderful visit! I jokingly say that I'm "running away from home" whenever I come to Port Townsend. This time I relaxed as never before, sleeping almost 9 hours my first night there. The stress just melted away. As for the food, it was wonderful!!! Both Cindy and Nathan are helpful with recommendations as to restaurants, shops, sights to see, as well as being informative about the history of the town. Also, another reviewer referred to Ursa, the Inn dog, as being so well behaved. I'll go even further to say that Ursa is better behaved than the majority of the human population in this day and age. These hosts have added a wonderful coffee machine, which is available 24/7, as well as a refrigerator (in the basement level). That is particularly convenient for those of us who need to use ice packs, etc., or if you want to keep a bottle of wine chilled. I can't wait to run away again.

Room Tip: Carefully read the info about the rooms. For example, I have a bad knee which makes using a tub a l...

Great experience. The rooms were comfortable and lovely, and the communal breakfast was Delicious and elegant. My mother and sister loved it, too. Elegant, clean, friendly, a piece of history to stay in.

My husband and I went here to celebrate our very first anniversary and were floored by how pleasant and comfortable our stay was.
We landed ourselves here simply because large groups had booked out the first hotels in Port Townsend that Google showed us. It turned out to be the best accident ever! We stayed in the Tower Suite and loved the views throughout the day. Cindy and Nathan are incredibly welcoming, helpful, and considerate. Their dog, Ursa, is better behaved than any dog I've met yet, and I'm usually nervous around new dogs.
Their breakfast was a treat, 3 hand made courses shared with all the other guests. Their coffee blend (which they crafted themselves at Sunrise Coffee Co.) was delicious. We also loved being welcome to wander the house and grounds. Easy walking to town, helpful restaurant tips, and truffles every night.
One word to the wise: look closely at the room you book, as it does list each individual room's bathroom situation on their website. We thoroughly enjoyed having a tub and bath salts even though the shower head did not have a place to hook up high. I can see how that could be a challenge for some individuals. Plenty of rooms do have showers.
We found our stay to be well worth the cost and will be back the next time we want to get away!

We first stayed here 20 years ago. That was our first B&B experience. We talked about coming back for years and finally did it this weekend. Little has changed. The new owners treat their guests like kings and queens and all of the charm is still here. It fell short though in two ways. First, we stayed in the Rose Suite. Very nice but the mattress was soft and bouncy and instead of a shower, the room only has a tub. A bath was not in my plan so I washed my hair in the sink and will shower when I get home. The other issue is that the room was expensive. The breakfast was great and like I said, the hosts are awesome, but it was priced 20-25% too high.

I don't know if we will come back. Maybe in another 20 years. :)

Nathan B, Owner at Old Consulate Inn, responded to this review, January 20, 2014
We are sorry that you did not understand that this room only had a claw-foot tub - we have made it as clear as possible with both pictures and descriptions on our website. And perhaps the prices have gone up in the last 20 years ;) We are careful of our pricing - we consider other Port Townsend accommodations and what we have to offer, including a three-course hot homemade breakfast, antiques, gazebo, billiard room, and garden overlooking the bay. We also offer a wide range of room situations and prices.
When you come back, and we hope you do, we will probably have had a brass shower installed in the claw-foot tub of that room (it is going to require some tricky bracing in the attic which we hope to get to this winter. We'll post pictures when we get it finished!... pictures of the shower, not the attic!)

The Old Consulate Inn is nestled within a five block radius of the heart of Port Townsend. It is within walking distance of numerous eating, shopping and historic sites. The owners are adept at making one feel welcome and informed of the history of the area. When Cindy serves breakfast in her Victorian garb one truly feels at tune with the 1890s. The food is exceptional and the accommodations very comfortable...........this will be our first pick for a return visit!

Room Tip: The second floor Master Suite had an exceptional view.

After a couple of less than satisfactory stays in B&B's we were a bit reluctant to try another but our 4 night stay at the Old Consulate restored our faith. Nathan and Cindy could not have been nicer or more helpful and were just wonderful hosts. The accommodations were terrific, the antique furniture was in keeping with the age of the house and added to its unique charm.
The inn is in a great location. It is very convenient to downtown a quick ride or a nice walk while enjoying the view and the deer. It is also close to other attractions in the area.

The breakfasts were creative, hot, homemade, and got everyday off to a good start.

We would recommend the Old Consulate Inn without reservation!
