“What an unexpected pleasure!”
Reviewed September 13, 2010

Just got back from the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival and the best part of the trip was the Palace Hotel. It was such a great experience and I would love to go back again. The rooms were historical but very comfortable. The most comfortable hotel bed I've ever slept in! Yes, there was a tall flight of stairs but Robert the front desk agent gladly carried our bags up for us. What a delight he was! The hotel is nestled in the middle of all the action in Port Townsend. We were close to the festival, coffee shops, great restaurants and shopping. This was one of the most delightful weekends my husband and I have had in a long time. Thank you and I can't wait to go back to the Palace Hotel!

The hotel was situated in the centre of Port Townsend, just 2 minutes walk from the Upstage, one of the town's main live music venue's.The hotel had character with lots of interesting peices of antique furniture. There was no lift, which we knew about in advance. Our room was comfortable and clean, with a very comfortable bed. There was a kitchenette in one corner, but couldb't be used as there was no equipment or utensils, and this rather detracted from the ambiance of the room. There could have been better information on local facilities such as entertainment and eating.

Breakfast was not provided, and we would recommend the Blue Moose Cafe in the old harbour area. Amazing breakfast's.

Our room had an en suite, but no view to speak of. We looked out over the car park at the back. Rooms at the front of the hotel looked at over the main street, with most of them seeming to share bathrooms. These bathrooms were large with interesting period peices.

There was adequate in room drink making facilities and a TV, but the hairdryer had to be requested from receptionist - who was very helpful.

How do you spell disaster? You haven't lived until you have to lug your bags up three steep flights of stairs to an un-airconditioned room in the middle of a rare August heat wave in Washington state. Add to that smelly shower curtains, a non existent staff and bikers revving their engines at three in the morning in the street below, which competed with the stifling room to ensure that my family and I got no sleep. We had planned to stay two nights at this "charming" old Victorian hotel, but after a night of torture we bailed and luckily got the last air conditioned room at a Red Lion in nearby Port Angeles. I have never been so glad to see a Red Lion.

We - my husband and I - arrived in Port Townsend having read a number of TA reviews and knew The Palace Hotel was our first choice. So with no reservation, we were delighted that one room -- Miss Lou -- was available.

The person at the desk encouraged us to look at the rooms. We climbed the first flight of stairs to discover a friendly cleaning crew. They pointed us up the second steep flight to our room. We left our suitcases, glad we'd brought them with us. It's not a trip you'd want to make often. With encouragement from the cleaning staff, proceeded to explore all the rooms with open doors. What fun! Each was different and all captured the best spirit of the old brothel. My husband said, "you can tell the ladies would approve of the place."

The bed was comfortable, the room clean. One unfortunate dilemma is the sea gull challenge. A poop-streaked window does cloud the beautiful view of the water a bit. Also, we had a light-bulb out in the bathroom and screens that belonged in the windows were leaning in front of them.

We also had to clean some gull poop from our car on the way out. But the hose was close by in the hotel lot in back and it didn't take long.

All in all, we'd stay at the Palace again.

The Palace Hotel proved to be the perfect companion to a dark and stormy night. Set in an atmospheric Romanesque style building dating to 1889, the Palace has quite a storied history including a stint as a brothel during the early part of the 20th century. I was particularly impressed by the warm welcome provided on arrival and the readiness with which staff were ready to assist. Staff were very helpful in providing excellent restaurant recommendations and suggestions for things to see and do in the area. Each room is individual in it's decor and all benefit from 14 foot ceilings and cathedral windows. Beds are very comfortable and decor is true to the period of the building, but for the recent addition of flat screen LCD tv's and free wireless internet, both welcome additions. As mentioned by previous reviewers, there are no stairs, nor air conditioning so if either is a concern, this may not be your preferred destination. The location can't be beat; right in downtown Port Townsend with shops, restaurants and the waterfront just steps away.

My husband, three month old baby and I stayed two nights here and we loved it! We originally made reservations for room 10B, one of the cheapest rooms, but when we went to check in the man at the front desk he informed us they were slow and upgraded us to room 9, one of there most expensive rooms! The hotel used to be a brothel, and all of the rooms are named after former prostitutes, which is fun! Theres no elevator but even on the third floor with a baby it was worth it! They leave the doors open to the rooms that aren't in use, and my husband and I had fun wandering around and snooping! Its supposedly haunted but we never saw anything much to our disappointment. One thing to note if you're going to stay in Port Townsend in the winter months is that most of the shops close at 5pm, and don't open until 10am, so there isn't much to do at night, we did see a movie at the Rose Theatre(only a five minute walk away) which was great, but only shows two different movies. We had a great time, and plan to go back this summer when we can do more exploring!
