I grew up spending summers on the Kitsap Peninsula, and now live here year round. Over the years we watched the General Store go into a shabby decline. It hit a real low about ten years ago when it served prepackaged burgers (topped with what looked and tasted like Velveeta) from a takeaway counter. Therefore we were astonished when we were starving and found ourselves here last week, because the food is incredible. The General Store and Cafe has undergone an unbelievable transformation in the past two years ago. The sitdown upscale cafe still has the charm of the old store, but the food is fresh, often organic, and excellently prepared. We returned again today with out-of-state guests to show off this newly-rediscovered gem. Today we had the Reuben, a Bleu Cheese burger, the Chicken-Mango salad, and the grilled cheese sandwich "their way." Everything was perfect from the cold crisp freshiness of the salad to the warm and gentle melt of the cheeses. The french fries, sweet-potato fries and onion rings were all crisp on the outside, but soft and warm within, seasoned without too much salt and not tasting of the deep fryer. For dessert we shared one amazing mocha cheese cake. We will be back again and again.
As for ambience, there are two windows in the dining area, so view tables are difficult; however the food is so good that it hardly matters. Besides you can have a great walk and views after you finish your meal. Port Gamble is worth a visit as well.

The Port Gamble General Store Cafe is excellent every time we visit. When we're in the mood for breakfast, a great lunch and excellent dinners. We love their fry bread with gravy for breakfast - so much better than a biscuit. My husband loves their omelets and I really like their salad entrees. If you want dessert try the cinnamon rolls - no matter what meal they are sure to please. The store & cafe have celebrated their 2nd anniversary so we hope they're here for the long haul! Give them a try the next time your in the North Kitsap area.

IF for some reason you find yourself in Port Gamble (and you probably should find a reason to be there) and you are looking for lunch or dinner, it might not occur to you to go the The General Store. But you should....

Nestled in the midst of quaint and lovely Port Gamble, right on the main street is The General Store. The store itslef has a lovely modern but quaint Mercantile feel but the goods are well, good, and you will find something you must have for your home.

But, go to the back and you will find a restaurant that is big city worthy, but small town friendly. Service is prompt and super friendly, they know their menu and wine list very well and make good recommendations. Speaking of the wine list. Don't see what you like? Then go back up front to the General Store, choose one of the wines there and have it at purchase price with no corkage fee. Who does that? The General Store does, happily.

The menu is extensive and features locally sourced, exceptional ingredients prepared with a loving hand. Specials are listed daily. Prices are ridiculously reasonable, just WAIT until you try the food.

Between us we shared, ate and passed around: the giant meatball: homemade, lovely on a good marinara style sauce with a most excellent focaccia bread. BIG. The beet salad: oh my goodness good. Big enough for a meal with perfectly cubed beets, excellent crisp salad greens and a slice of feta on a yummy crusty bread. Deeeelicious. We had for a main the special which was a vegetarian gnocchi with fried sage and brown butter and roasted cauliflower. Veggies, you've got it made! Lastly, the Moules Frites: healthy mussels, in a cider creme fraiche marinade with accompanying fries.

We were too full to finish, but note that desserts going by were amazing looking and the oohs and aaahs coming from adjoining tables seem like good evidence of goodness.

In a word, the General Store is a delicious experience. Open only a couple of year, this place is really a great find. Cost was very inexpensive: large dinner for two with wine and tip was under 70 dollars; and we tip well.

Took a drive to scenic Port Gamble and stopped for lunch. Had very good clam chowder, an excellent BLT and very flavorful chicken salad. Service was excellent and sat outside on their patio. Prices are decent and food was excellent.

This is a couple of steps up from fast food. Food is local and tasy, if not original. Service is unrushed. The alfresco experience on a sunny day is great. Try fish and chips, chicken salad, burger.
