I grew up spending summers on the Kitsap Peninsula, and now live here year round. Over the years we watched the General Store go into a shabby decline. It hit a real low about ten years ago when it served prepackaged burgers (topped with what looked and tasted like Velveeta) from a takeaway counter. Therefore we were astonished when we were starving and found ourselves here last week, because the food is incredible. The General Store and Cafe has undergone an unbelievable transformation in the past two years ago. The sitdown upscale cafe still has the charm of the old store, but the food is fresh, often organic, and excellently prepared. We returned again today with out-of-state guests to show off this newly-rediscovered gem. Today we had the Reuben, a Bleu Cheese burger, the Chicken-Mango salad, and the grilled cheese sandwich "their way." Everything was perfect from the cold crisp freshiness of the salad to the warm and gentle melt of the cheeses. The french fries, sweet-potato fries and onion rings were all crisp on the outside, but soft and warm within, seasoned without too much salt and not tasting of the deep fryer. For dessert we shared one amazing mocha cheese cake. We will be back again and again.
As for ambience, there are two windows in the dining area, so view tables are difficult; however the food is so good that it hardly matters. Besides you can have a great walk and views after you finish your meal. Port Gamble is worth a visit as well.
