“Downward Spiral of Food & Service”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

Susumu has always been a family favorite for birthdays. However, our visits in the past year have lead us to make another choice of restaurants. Last weeks visit consisted of
1. Waiting at the entrance for over 10 minutes for anyone to even acknowledge us.
2. Telling them how many were in our party and the hostess disappeared for another 10 minutes not telling us how long of a wait.
3. We chose to sit in the bar since the waiting area was full. No bartender or server at all in the bar.
4. Finally seated at the table which seats 8. There were already 6 there so they placed us around the side and into an area of the table that had a supply of napkins, etc, stacked up.
5. This restaurant is usually on the chilly side all the time, but tonight was extremely cold and everyone at the table was complaining about trying to stay warm.
6.. It took over 1 hour from the time of seating to start receiving our food. The chef was new and the food was underseasoned. Rice was bland, veggies were lacking flavor and the shrimp appetiser that everyone gets was boring. They always give diners 2 cups of sauces for the veggies and meats to spice up the flavor, which was missing for everyone. The grill went off constantly and the chef had to apologize for the "bad equipment" as he put it.
7. During the dinner there were no servers attending to our table. Water glasses were empty and several at our table wanted additional beverages. We finally had to get up and ask a server to tend to our table, since the chef was busy.
8. After 2 hrs and 15 minutes the meal was finally over.
We will never return, unfortunately, since this used to be a great place to bring friends and family.

“Good food, entertaining but service sucks”
Reviewed January 10, 2013

If you are willing to put up with the negatives to get to the 15 minutes of entertaining food prep then you might try this place. The wait staff act like they would rather you weren't there so don't expect to be GREETED when you walk in the door. This treatment is likely to continue until the Chef or is it cook arrives, which maybe fairly lengthy, at your table to prepare your meals. This part is fun and compensates for the poor customer service by the rest of the staff. I have no food critic credentials but thought the food is pretty good. One lady in our party lost a part of her necklace. A number of us got down on our hands and knees to look for the thing. The floor was more than a little dirty, I hope the rest of their cleaning is up to standard. None of the restaurant staff asked what we were doing crawling around on the floor or offered assistance, just ignored us. Only the chef deserved a tip, he had a jar on his cart and I can see why. If you choose to go there be prepared to entertain yourselves until dinner time. Enough said.

“What happened?”
Reviewed August 25, 2012

This used to be our favorite place but after TONIGHT, WE WILL NOT BE BACK! We waited over 45 minutes to eat and when our cook came out, the grill wasn't even on! Another 10 minutes? What? Our waitress saw us twice, while we had no drinks? And then their sauces tasted terrible, unlike anything we had before. We asked for boxes, disgusted with our service. We payed begrudgingly...after explaining how upset we were, they offered no discount just an apology. We will NEVER BE BACK! And just a tip to the owners...if your customers are leaving as soon as the food was on the plate, something's wrong! Plus, we customers complain, this is your chance for retribution not apologies.

“teppanyaki with a flair”
Reviewed August 6, 2012

they cook the food right in front of you with much flair and showmanship! Fun to watch, and participate. Food quality depends on what ingredients you ordered. The fried rice was very good!

“Entertaining meal good food - not a quick meal”
Reviewed February 24, 2012

Went to Susumu on date night with my wife on the recommendation of a co-worker. We were forewarned that the exterior and location were not fantastic but it was worth it. They were right on all accounts. The restaurant is attached to a hotel that does not appear to be very upscale and the location is across the street from a Big Lots that pretty well sums up the location.

Inside we were seated pretty quickly and waited a bit to have our orders taken, presumably to allow for more people to arrive to fill up the shared seating. Once more people came and our chef came out the show began. There was a small child sitting at our group and he made sure to involve her as well as everyone else and the experience was fun. There was a flaming onion and eggs jumping in the air in addition to clinking of knives and such. The food was great I had the spicy chicken which had the option of spicy 1-5, I went for 5 and it had a good flavor but not burning spicy. I should note however I have a high tolerance/expectation for spicy and not very many things actually qualify as spicy in my opinion everyone has a different take on that. In addition to your main food you get a good helping of fried rice, shrimp (i did not eat - not a seafood person) vegetables, salad and soup. You will NOT leave here hungry. For the two of us each ordering an entree and a soda the bill was 40$ and we of course tipped the chef for such a good show. Definitely a fun experience and would do it again, my only complaint was not realizing how long we would be there because of waiting for others to sit at the table and as a result we missed our movie and date night ended with just a meal.

Would absolutely go again just plan for a much longer meal!
