amazing dining experience...well worth the trip. All the perfection of the French Laundry, with the whimsy of Alinea. The service was great, perfect. One of us had the wine pairing and the other had the juice pairing..both were interesting and delicious.
The food was incredible. Everything fit together like a fine tuned orchestra, all the flavors were at once fresh, and pure, but inventive and interesting. It is really an experience not to be missed.

The New York Times was right -- this is a destination culinary experience worth traveling to. Willows Inn Restaurant not only lived up to our high expectations, the staff and service reigned supreme over a feast fit for royals. When was the last time a notable chef took the time to serve and mingle with his guests? Evidently it's an everyday occurrence for this highly engaging staff who make your every wish come through (thank you for the loaf of home cooked bread and vat of creamy butter!). Beauty, innovation, and flavor punctuate fresh, seasonal, local food. Crowning the meal is the location, nestled in a 100-year-old Inn on a relatively unknown island among the immensely popular San Juan Islands. Views of Rosario Straight and barnacle-encrusted beaches to comb mark a truly Northwest Experience we can be proud of and which New York, in all its glory, could never replicate.

From the reviews posted by others, I felt we just had to stop there on a recent visit to Lummi Island. I believe the dinner at the Willows Inn Restaurant may meet its review status; however, the cafe/deli on site certainly comes up short. It is in the same building and some of the outside seating is shared; however, the service and quality of the food appears to be very different. We arrived around 2 p.m. and were told by the cafe staff that we could sit on the outdoor deck upstairs although the proprietors of the restaurant closed the seating at 3:30 to prepare for the dinner service. No problem for us and it was a great view from that vantage point. We were also told that a waitress would come up shortly to take our order; however, after 15 minutes we had seen no one at all. I walked down to the cafe and was met with each one blaming the other that no one had attended to us. Apparently the waitress was "new". After ordering, we were told they were out of two of the menu items we had chosen. With alternates selected, we waited on our meals. One of us ordered a cup of soup which arrived just lukewarm. When that was mentioned, we were told that the waitress had been told about that earlier in the service but apparently had not fixed the problem. Water was served with very little ice and just tepid. The sandwiches ordered were quite good but one in our party asked for the 1/2 sandwich and soup special but got the entire sandwich. They adjusted the charge to reflect the special but when she asked for a box to take half home, it didn't arrive until she asked again. The experience was just poor and we decided on the spot to let it be a one-time mistake to visit this cafe. They seemed disorganized and ill prepared for a full house as they had run out of the basic roast beef, etc. during a routine lunch service. The "new" waitress was dressed inappropriately for service as it looked like she was going to a rock concert. Everyone else working there was pretty casual as well. More professional attire and an attitude of "customers first" would go a long way. Throwing each other under the bus doesn't fix any problem and makes a guest uncomfortable when it appears there is conflict between employees/management.
