“Lopez Island is absolutely wonderful”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

I have been coming up to Lopez since a little kid and my family has a house/business up there. I am not able to come up as often as I used to (or like to) but one essential To-Do is always to go on a bike ride around the island.

Lopez is a great biking island for individuals, groups or families (safety is not as much of a concern with little children most other areas). If you are a boater, this is an excellent day trip or use of transportation to other places in the island such as the local shops in the Village or the variety of great parks. The island is relatively flat besides the initial climb off the ferry and the best biking island in the San Juans.

There is just something about biking on Lopez, the scenery, smells and friendliness of the people just melt the stress away. Lopez tends to stick with you and you have no choice but to be back.

“Worth a 3rd visit”
Reviewed November 20, 2012

We've biked Lopez 2 of the last 3 years. We bring park our car in Anacortes, walk our bikes on the ferry (saves hours in the summer) and less than an hour later, we're on laid back Lopez.

The hill from the ferry landing is a wake up call, quite steep and always the toughest hill on the trip. We usually camp for 2-3 nights, and go for 15-20 mile rides during the day. The locals are friendly and tolerant of bicycles. Highlights abound all around the island. We love Agate Beach, and Spencer Spit. Don't miss the farmer's market on Saturdays.

Regarding hills- if you are used to riding on flats, you will find it a bit hilly, but not bad- take your time and look around. If you are used to hills, it's no problem as the hills are minor, the most challenging being the one from the ferry landing.

Going back again next summer.....

“Nice way to spend the day”
Reviewed October 3, 2012

We rented bicycles from Village Cycles. It's in the village but Mike had them waiting for us at the ferry landing along with a map with a recommended route. Our first stop was Spencer's Spit and it was well worth it. After lunch in the village, we biked to Shark Reef Sanctuary. There were more hills than we were prepared for so Mike was kind enough to give us ride back to the ferry. It was a sunny fall day with a very scenic ride.

“My favorite San Juan Island for biking”
Reviewed August 20, 2012

Out of the three islands I've biked (San Juan, Orcas and Lopez), Lopez remains my favorite as it does have less hills and less traffic. It's also easy to get to as it's the first stop on the ferry loop. We like to take the 9:35 AM sailing to allow for a comfortable morning. We enjoy traveling the island in a counter clock-wise direction as it allows a stop in The Village for coffee and getting food for a picnic lunch to enjoy later on the beach at the south end of the island where there are no restaurants and only one small grocery mart. There are hills- the first being right off the ferry- but that's the way it always is on islands. Don't let the thought of hills scare you off as you can always walk them. Traffic is usually light with the exception of Center Road.
