“Germany in Washington”
Reviewed July 6, 2010

If you want to get away from the cold & rain and hussle & bussle of Seattle - take a beautiful 2 hour drive east thru the mountains to Leavenworth, WA. It's a small "German Village" nestled in the middle of the mountains, but warmer and sunnier than the area around Seattle. The market square area is only 4 - 5 blocks long and a couple of blocks wide with lots of parking and a free trolley. Offers many interesting shops, i.e. clothing, wood, arts, and tourist trinkets. There are many really good pastry and bakeries mixed in along with lots of German restaurants and Beer Gardens. It also offeres other foreign and American restaurants. Very cozy and friendly feel to the whole area and a few recreational activities which we didn't take advantage of since we didn't have kids/teens along.

“Bavaria in Washington”
Reviewed March 20, 2010

The little town of Leavenworth is difficult to reach much of the year due to snowy conditions but now Amtrak has a stop there making a two day trip a very easy inexpensive experience into the Cascade Mountains and a German like village.

The train ride in is much in the dark but the ride out starts early morning and passes through one amazing vista after next as you ride the very comfortable Empire Builder route connecting Seattle to Chicago.

Bring your own refreshments and food on the train. Compared to two years ago the food aboard has taken a decline in quality.

“Leavenworth-the happiest place in Washington”
Reviewed November 1, 2009

Leavenworth is a wonderful way of spending time sledding in yielding snow, eating tantalizing Bavarian dishes, and listening to cheery Christmas music. For instance, the snow is faultless to glide on for it is silky. This Bavarian village is adorned with lovely Christmas lights and delightful embellishments. Additionally, Leavenworth is bursting with luscious sausages and joyful Christmas carols. The Bavarian food is so mouth-watering, juicy, and tender that the taste is way beyond words. The holiday music in Leavenworth is a blissful style for Christmas and the tunes are merry. Leavenworth is a getaway experience to another world full of diverse culture and never-ending happiness.

“A let-down shopping vacation”
Reviewed October 20, 2009

We went for a weekend in November. I was thinking the town would be filled with darling little shops and that I could get much of my Christmas shopping done. The shops are NOT that cute. There is a Christmas shop that's ok, but nothing else very exciting. If you're going it should probably be for Oktoberfest or outdoor activities.
