Expensive and not better than any restaurant in Seattle. A big disappointment.

This was written by a guest we asked to leave.

We have NEVER had to ask a guest to leave. In the 22 years we have been here, this has never happened. This and the other review written on the same day are by a couple we asked to leave. We regret it came to this. We also feel the reason we had to ask them to leave is evident in the body of their two reviews. We sincerely hope they have a better time somewhere else.
We welcome all feed back, but these listings are purely retaliation. Feel free to take what you will from either of these reviews. We only hope you understand the spirit in which it was written. Such is the nature of online reviews. These two had reached a level of anger and contempt over the issue, we had no recourse, but to sever the stay. A guest that yells and screams at us is obviously not at the right place.

Up until this problem arose the couple had been giving great feedback about their stay to our staff. As a policy we do not request reviews are ever edited or removed, on any site. We believe the public is smart and able to make choices based on the facts.

I have a hard time supporting a "local" company that makes cutthroat business moves that hurts its employees

We have NO idea what this is about. We really do pride ourselves on being fair and kind with all of our business choices. Local economy takes, our staff welfare and ethics of vendor are considerations.
I assume this has to do with not renewing a lease for one of our tenants. We tried to negotiate on many occasions, never could find a compromise that fit.

Deservedly popular, well located within walking distance of everything. Comfortable and spacious rooms. Food a little overpriced and fussy.

“Dining as theatre, extremely bad theatre...”
Reviewed February 9, 2012

I’ve been a guest at the Inn at Langley and its associated restaurant for over twenty years. Long ago, a weekend there was an experience to be savoured- a nice room with a view, a quality meal without pretense, a quiet getaway from the bustle of the city- it was all reliably pleasant, sometimes even memorable. No more.

When I go out to dinner with my partner, the most important part of the evening is our time together. Not the restaurant, not the food, and certainly not the chef. A fine restaurant makes its customers feel comfortable, and provides them with an opportunity to make memories together. The food, the wine, and the service are just tools to make that happen.

If any of this rings true to you, then you will be massively disappointed by the restaurant at the Inn at Langley. There are hints of what’s in store on their website, as follows-

‘The restaurant at The Inn at Langley, operated by Chef Matt Costello, is the gem of the Inn. This Whidbey Island restaurant overlooks a fabulous herb garden and features a double-sided river rock fireplace. The open kitchen allows you to marvel at Chef Costello's finesse as he prepares a sublime six-course dinner, featuring Whidbey Island's freshest seasonal fare. You may complement this culinary dynamic by the Inn's extensive wine collection.’

No, this is not elBulli, and that is certainly not Ferran Adria in the kitchen (even though nitro frozen litchi cream is on the menu), so why all the fuss? In 2011, does anyone really need a self-serving lecture about fresh ingredients and local produce? It’s a message that’s twenty years old, and we get it, we really do. And after all the drama, the food finally arrives, and far from marveling at Chef Costello’s finesse as he prepares this sublime six course dinner, we are left wondering- how on earth does he get away with this? The food is pretentious and showy, but there are dozens of restaurants in Seattle where the food is more inventive, more harmonious, and more satisfying. Even the service is lackluster; but at the end of the evening you will nonetheless get a tab that can easily run $300-$400 per couple. Say what?

The restaurant at the Inn at Langley would never survive in a truly competitive market. Would it make the top ten is Seattle? Not even close. Would it make the top 100? Doubtful. Save yourself the experience, and the expense- the restaurant at the Inn at Langley is most definitely a place to be avoided.

This just doesn't make a ton of sense. We haven't even served this menu in years. I suspect there maybe some other issues at play. I tried to contact this person to refund their meal and hopefully learn more about the problem. No reply.
Upon reading all the reviews on this page I have never seen such wild swings. This forum seems to be a place to bring a number of issues into play. We talk with every guest at dinner. We would hate to have anyone leave feeling undervalued. Seriously just talk to us we want you happy. That's really what we are striving to do.
